Nearly Hair
“Nothing, is what it appears to be, when it's only with your eyes you see.”
― N'Zuri Za Austin

Today for the first time I had someone approach me and asked "Your hair has a texturizer right?" I was shocked because although my hair wasn't so defined I didn't think it looked too hott.

I am pretty sure many have thought my natural hair is processed with a texturizer but I doubt people gave it too much thought.

Today was one of the few moments in my life were i felt actually honored for having Natural hair. I am not saying this to disregard my natural hair or put it down, but after answering a question like that... I couldn't help but smile! I have always loved having Natural hair and i have always done it for myself not to gain attention of other's eyes, so this experience was a joy.

I immediately started to answer hair questions and probably even persuaded the person to stop using a texturizer due to my lack of using texturizer.

So many people believe that they don't have a natural curl pattern but indeed they do. It just takes time to learn your hair and what products work best for you! There are many who conform to using a texturizer or other harsh chemical texture altering features to receive curls when in fact their natural hair is capable of doing so without a processing chemical. SAY NO TO SCURL OR JERRICURLS!

Listed below are just a few items I use to have my hair curl pattern refined and defined!

  • Giovanni Direct Leave In
  • Shea Moisture curling Smoothie
  • Kinky Curly Curling Custard
  • Blended beauty Cutie Silky Swirls

I know there have beenmany review but here goes my mini one.

I have been using the Olive Oil Eco styler gel for a month now but have yet to review it. This is partly because I have never received the results I have been looking for....Until now...

The Ecostyler  olive oil gel is a water based product that is in a gel format. Before every use you should ALWAYS i mean ALWAYS use some type of Conditioner because this gel can really leave your head crunchy! It is true that Ecostyler runs in many different holds and types but i prefer the Olive Oil due to its max hold!

Before I apply this product I moisturize with my Shea Moisture line and add in a the curl enhancing smotothie. With out the smootie i never achieved the look I really wanted with the gel. I feel that the smooth really made my curls pop working with the eco styler!

Now this is just personal for me and TOni, but honestly I have never gotten such great result with the Ecostyler. And no these great results actually resulted on day 3 of letting it sit. I simply woke up on day three rand my head under the shower literally for a second and bam! I was looking curly-fied! It was so simple. My hand didnt have to touch my hair at all. Of course I swirled around in my hair regardless because i love my hair that much! My hair feels soft and crunchy free.

Would I recomend the Ecostyler? Yes BUT only in liason with a conditioner or the Shea Moisture Curling Smoothie.

I rate this a 3.5 smooches/5 smooches

Dear (your name here),

Throughout your life there will be many obstacles’ that you will encounter. Some, in which will take you to the highest level of your life and some in which will bring you lower than you could have ever imagined. At the moments in which you are high, you feel like the world couldn't be better, as if nothing in your life will ever taint the feeling in which u feel. But, there are people who, in fact, taint these moments and bring you to a level in which you feel discouraged.
I question, How can you be discouraged?, Your amazing, intelligent, and glamorous- have all the makings to be successful. Nothing in your life shall ever fall short of greatness. What's the true meaning behind the word discourage; it means that you have doubt about moving forward, doubt of your success, and doubt on whether you can actually do it. If all is true, I know that discouragement doesn't apply to you, because you will never fear whether you can be successful, you know you will, it's just a matter of time of when it'll happen.
So don't ever feel discouraged about anything, and if you ever do, you have to remember, you yourself will be the only one to allow yourself to be discouraged, so evict all possibilities of allowing that to happen and be strong, and anything will be possible. Because we both know that your heart is too big and your passion is too strong to ever let up.
Love,
Your Friend

The day I popped out of my mom’s womb, she must have been pushing to Destiny’s Child Independent woman.

I feel as if that song was spoken into my life. I will and forever will be independent woman.

I have fended for myself, so to speak, ever since I started to receive an allowance. And then even more so after I was granted my first job.

You see, I never liked the feeling of depending on people… Whether it was depending on someone to take me to school or even someone to buy Shelia (My stomach) food, I always wanted to do things my way!

MY WAY OR THE HIGH WAY! I feel as though it may be good to depend on others because that is how trust is implemented, but I can’t suppress the independence in me.

Being sovereign is not a bad thing at all in my eyes. It shows ambition and self proclamation.

I can apply being independent to anything in my life even my hair. I am independent from the thoughts that bound me to societal holds. I need no one to hold my hand when I do my hair, because I know exactly how I want my hair and in which ways I want it styled.

I am independent from the wiles of the world. I need not the world to be happy but Jesus.

I am independent from the grip of men. Yes their coy sexual ways! It can be so easy to fall for a guy and want to be his all. Although I was pulled from him, he doesn’t need to be my supplement but compliment me. You can Do Bad all by yourself!

{I just had to rant or maybe rave about me…so there you have it lol. Yall Feel the same way? Comment Bellow.}

Ms.Leela James is a new type of sound to my ear. Why? Even though she dropped a well known accredited album in 2005 and took home an award back in '08 at the Soul Train awards, I never really gave Ms. James a chance. Some may call it bias, but now that I am more in tune with my "roots" so to speak, I have taken on the role of an optimist. This is including the music aspect of media. If there is a natural haired women out there in the music industry I tend to draw near to that specific person. Sorry, I wasn't going to sugar coat it, but that is just one more thing that I and the artist have in common. It's a cold bias world out there, and although being bias is not too good for the soul, it is real... how many of yall can relate?

What stroke my eye? Honestly it was her hair. No, this post will not be about her hair, but it is beautiful! ;)

I am simply doing what she is doing...which is trying to bring back the artistry in music! Her voice is simply amazing and she is using her talent for the better!

I don't know about you ladies (or gents) but to release my curls I usually stick with my Denman Brush a good moisturizer, preferably Shea Moisture line, and then some type of curl enhancing product or custard like Ecostyler gel.

NONE I repeat NONE of the products I use have harsh chemicals that manipulate your hair texture permanently. You would not find alkaline or sodium hydroxide in KCCC or Eco styling gel.

While reading Black Hair Magazine I saw an ad for Luster's PINK Shortlooks with Curl-Release Formula which read,

"Now you can release the beauty of your hair using Luster's  Pink SHORTLOOKS Texturizer with "curl-release formula."It loosens your natural curl pattern without the damage of a relaxer. So you can curl it, scrunch it, wave it, or twist it any way you want with Luster's Pink SHORTLOOKS Texturizer."Yea so, what boggled my mind the most was this line:

"It loosens your natural curl pattern without the damage of a relaxer..."

But yet the box says " No-lye" which is almost the same as a relaxer.

Wikipedia states:

"No lye" relaxers

Due to increasing awareness concerning the potential dangers of sodium hydroxide found in traditional relaxer formulas, many women have begun abandoning them.[1] "No-lye" relaxers have become the preferred formula for those unwilling to give up relaxers completely. "No-lye" relaxers are of three main types. One type operates on the same general principle as lye relaxers but uses a slightly weaker alkaline agent, such as potassium hydroxidelithium hydroxide, or guanidine hydroxide. The last of these is not pre-formulated, but rather is generated at the time of use by combining a cream containing calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) with an "activating solution" of guanidine carbonate.

Another type of "no-lye" relaxer uses ammonium thioglycolate, which is also known as perm salt for its use in permanent waves. Perm salt is a chemical reducing agent which selectively weakens the hair's cystine bonds instead of disrupting the entire protein, but strips out the natural oils even more thoroughly than the alkali hydroxide products. Afterward, the thioglycolate must be oxidized with a special solution of hydrogen peroxide or sodium bromate.

Lastly, in most relaxers sold for home use, the active agents are ammonium sulfite and ammonium bisulfite (the two compounds are interchangeable, depending on the surrounding pH). These also selectively reduce the cystine bonds, but are much weaker and work more slowly. Nevertheless, their mild action minimizes (but does not entirely eliminate) collateral irritation to the skin.

"For the ladies who dare to wear it short" They say... I say Ha! Ladies please do not be fooled. Receiving this product in your hair will alter your natural curl pattern PERMANENTLY! This is a harsh chemical dolls! Don't be hoodwinked.

Lately I have been in an Independent "I can buy my own" type of mood. Well in this case "make" my own. I have been browsing through my hair crush's site and fell in love with her DIY section.

I have always loved arts and crafts because it gives you so much leeway to express yourself. The best part about it, is that you can never be wrong in your creation because its YOUR project.

I was inspired by Nikole, and decided to try one of her her little projects out. I have a few snapshots posted. I may add a little bit more to my project or leave it be. It depends how I like it after I wear it. Which is another browine point added to the DIY table. You have the last say to what is the finished product. =)

So I have never in a million years would have thought I would ever use this product, but seeing how I am in this new "use What you got" era, I decided to give it a try. The Consistency of the product was as I expected in a gel format.

The ingredients are most definitiley in the ball park for good hair maintenance. It is a water based product, which is a plus and the second is glycerin which is a great component for your hair. Glycerin extracts the moisture from the air and pulls it into your hair strands. You can't go wrong with moisture especially in these drying times.

The price range for this item can range anywhere between 3 to 6 dollars. Verry affordable right? This product can be purchased at any hairstore or pharmacy stores like CVS, Rite Aid or Walgreens. If you are lucky you can spot these in Walmart aswell.

My Overall Review:

Although I wouldn't use this on any of my coils again it is great gel to use on flat twist. It has any easy slip and hold for the styles you wish to achieve. It didn't leave my hair crunchy or stiff but still had a great hold. The smell was mediocre and i would definitely recommend this for styling or an alternative to a curl defining after braidouts.

Here are some pictures after I took out my coils. My coils came out as if I didnt even coil my hair and then there were a few that I adored!!

Here are My first ever flat twist. I really feel as if the Smooth N Shine did the trick for me. You decide....

I Sooooo sooo sooo use to want to be her back in the day. This is all because of her leading role in Selma, Lord, Selma the movie that aired on Disney back in the day. You guys remember right? Well tonight while I was browsing through some channels on TV I glimpsed a peak at her Natural Hair while she was debating... Yup that's right i was watching the Great Debators. Ms. Jurnee Smollett is one little lady who takes advantage of her curly hair and isnt afraid to experiment and flaunt the versatility of her hair.

Everyweekend I will be posting encouraging words for those out there who are in need of a boost or a smile. Today my good friend Sheldon writes to you ladies out there. Here is what he has to say!

To The Girl Feeling Discouraged

Dear Girl, I want to start this letter with telling you 2 of the most important things you need to know and believe. 1st is the definition of discouragement...Discouragement [n]- the feeling of despair in the face of obstacles. Notice how the word obstacle sticks out from the sentence. The 2nd thing you need to know and believe is that when obstacles come your way, you must stand strong. Obstacles are meant to knock you down and make you want to quit but that's not what you do. You're not a quitter and I know that. Know, that not one successful person had it easy. When you see that obstacle coming your way you gotta stand tall, square your shoulders, and run into it. We have to problems to get where we are going. If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere. When hard times come upon you, they are hear to only separate the weak from the strong. It is at that point where you tell yourself " I CAN" and keep moving leaving those who quit behind. You don't have to depend on anyone but you to keep pressing on. Finally, this might sound cliche, but If HE knew you couldn't handle it, HE wouldn't give it to you. So whatever it is that you are going through...Its time to stop the crying, stop the complaining, the feeling sorry for yourself and knock your problems away. Because you are strong, and whatever comes your way, you WILL find a way to do it. There's no more trying to do something. Doing is your only option. I hope this helps

So I was feeling just a little bored with my TWA already... For those of you who know me personally you should know that I get bored with my hair very quickly.... Therefore I sat down two nights ago and coiled my hair using Long Aid Activating Curl. Before I coiled I made sured I deep conditioned with organics cholesterol tea tree oil.

I actually think I did a great job...for my first time and all. Here are some pics....

I would post the second day pics, BUT it was horrible lol! I will definitely be trying the coils again =) I love them!!

Lets stroll through the time

My name is Faithlynn Morris and I'm an 18-year-old sophomore at UConn.

When did you do your BC? I cut it all of in November of 2009.

Why did you decide to go natural? I'd had a mohawk prior to my cut and I wanted for my hair to start growing evenly again, so I decided to shave everything. Also, I'd decided to no longer use weaves or get relaxers.

What was your support system like once you went natural? Everybody loved it. It wouldn't have mattered much to me if they hadn't, as it would still be my hair, but everyone seemed very excited about it.

What is one of the strangest comments you have received about your hair? "So, is it gonna, like, grow back...normal?"

How to you maintain moisture and curl? Everyday, after I wash it in the shower, I put in a small but healthy amount of curl activator.

What advice would you give to new naturals or naturals period? Maybe just to embrace their hair as it is. I am very much an advocate of loving yourself as you are and as you were made to be.

If you had a choice would you revert back to permed hair? Nope.

What are some of your favorite sites for a support system? I do love napskinkslove.onsugar.com....

How do you spruce up your natural hair on a fun night/special occasion? I use some Jam on my edges. It's also one of my favorite products.

What was your transition process like? It wasn't very difficult at all. I simply had hair one day and the next I did not. I quite liked it, actually.

What are you hair goals? I had an afro my freshman year of high school, before I delved into many, many different hairstyles. I would like to see a nice, curly afro in my future.
