I think it is time for an upgrade! I have so many people come up to me and say I want to be natural! And I always encourage it, but now it’s time to pump up the volume and give them a little more inspiration. I want to log my hair journey. Yes, this blog is supposed to do that, but I find myself going on many tangents so I may need a separate device to keep my journey on point! I think I may utilize my Fotki… I know that is what truly inspired me when I started to go natural with different users photo albums so it’s time to bring in my own photos. I rarely pay attention to my growth BUT it is becoming more noticeable because you can start to see the black growth over my colored hair!

I am so excited to see where this is going. I guess I have just been so caught up with school where I am not really experimenting with my hair, which can be a good thing. I think my hair grows more when its not tampered. Any who, I am going to start to record my hair journey weekly just to give everyone an update or even to keep my progress recorded to see where I have come from! Be on the lookout because my hair diary is on the rise! #oww

I have been watching TV surprisingly in my spare 5 minute time and saw a commercial for Naturals! Isn’t that awesome?? I really thought when it first came on it would be something like Dr. Miracle but it is actually a line that is geared to naturals called Design Essentials.

The ladies in the commercials are most likely wearing wigs…but there NATURAL wigs!! Owwwww!!

Any who being the product junkie I am, I truly considering trying these products. Its results are supposedly supposed to be magical and great for popping out those dull natural curls of ours. So next Thursday (my pay day), I should be taking a portion out of my check for one of these products. I think I may start with the Natural Curl Stretching Crème! The website says it is for high performance curl enhancing styles. Check out the website here!!

Hopefully I will have a review soon!

Heat can definitely be the enemy in most cases when it comes to hair. Heat damages hair follicles and can ultimately cause the hair shaft to break. Once the damage is done…it’s done!

It’s like bleach and clothing. Once a spot of bleach touches a black or dark article of clothing it’s impossible to reverse.

BUT there are some instances where you can bend the rules…

I know sometimes a lot of places like twitter or forums can join together and separate the “real naturals” from the “heat using naturals”, and this can be very discouraging at times. But I say it’s your hair, treat it how it likes to be treated!

On this journey of perfect hair (perfect in my mind of course), there WILL be times I opt to use heat! This may mean doing a blow out or even flat ironing but in the proper manner (heat protectants)… it is just my preference.

Most styles worn by naturals can be rocked without heat and simply Mother Nature’s hair, but sometimes it’s nice to speed up the process.

Have you ever wondered why there is cool setting on your dryer??

Some styles look a whole lot better when a dryer is used or even a diffuser. It in fact reduces fizz and helps curls stay in place.

Therefore…Don’t throw out the dryer! It may be handy in the coily rushed days!

I’m Elle, and I’m a DC native currently living in Los Angeles. Basically, I’m a hair junkie. Usually when I’m done with work, I’m doing something that pertains to hair, whether it be shopping for products, researching ingredients, conversing on my hair boards, working out (stimulate that scalp!), reading books about hair, or doing my hair. Everything about hair is just so fascinating to me, because everyone’s hair is so different. Recently, I got a few textbooks on the science of hair from the library, so I know exactly how nutrition, the elements and chemicals affect my fro – I named her Izzy. Besides that I do what any 20-something woman does; right now I’m just loving life and loving my new city! One day, I’d like my hair to be so large it blocks people out of pictures.

When did you decide to throw the relaxer out (if you did)?

My last relaxer was in May 2009; I got relaxers for 21 years. After a few months, I cut my hair into a Mohawk/frohawk, and still had relaxed hair on top, but I wore it in a curly wash and go. Finally, in December 2009, I cut off the top of my mohawk and BC’ed to an inch of hair in order to be fully natural!

What was your support system like once you went natural?

I had a TON of support from being on hair boards; the ladies there are SO helpful and have a plethora of information. When I first decided to stop relaxing, I was on the boards for hours looking for inspiration and ways to care for my hair. I still frequent them today, because I love looking for new tips for my hair, browsing for product raves, and simply chatting about hair. For anyone who wants to go natural, I highly recommend finding a board to join.

How would you describe your hair journey so far?

Fun! Sometimes I look in the mirror and I’m like, “Hey, girl!” Yes, I talk to my hair sometimes – trust me, it’s not that abnormal. I enjoy playing with my hair and trying out new products, even though I already have staples that I can always go to. When I had a relaxer, I didn’t even know what my natural texture was, so I often stare at my hair in disbelief. But I love it; it’s super curly and getting bigger every day!

What are your favorite hair/homemade products?

My favorite deep conditioner hands down is extra virgin olive oil and honey, and sometimes I like to add in some coconut milk. As for products, lol, where do I even start? I have so many! Oyin Honey Hemp Conditioner is amazing; if it were alive I’d definitely marry it and have its curly headed bottle babies. My favorite leave-in conditioner is Shea Moisture Shea Butter Leave-In, and my fave stylers are Komaza Haircare Califia Styling Pudding, Kinky Curly Curling Custard, and plain aloe vera gel.

When it comes to your hair, what do you find most challenging?

Hands down, my low porosity hair. It takes forever to wet my hair in the shower, it rarely likes to absorb products, and it takes ALL DAY to dry. Seriously, I can do my hair at 7am, and at 10pm my roots will still be damp. To help my hair get more moisture, I’ve started doing weekly Cherry Lola treatments, which contains yogurt, baking soda, and Bragg’s Amino Acids. I do it about once a week and my hair loves it.

Your hair is so beautiful, but what is the most craziest remark you have has received about your hair?

Once, I was at a party, and a couple of guys had a debate with me about how black I am, because they weren’t sure if they wanted to call my hair kinky or curly. This literally went on for about fifteen, minutes, and one told me that I had to be mixed with white because I have freckles and because of my hair. Say what?! The length of that conversation alone was bizarre enough. Any advice to the aspiring successful natural haired women out there/closing remarks? Whatever reason you want to go natural, make sure you do it for you. Whether it’s for a hairstyle, the health of your hair, maintenance, anything…just do it for you, and no one else. It’s your hair, and you don’t need to answer to anyone!

Where can we find you on the net?

Everywhere! I’m always reviewing products on my blog, The Quest for the Perfect Curl (no, that doesn’t mean perfectly styled hair, lol), and my YouTube channel. Also, I talk to many of the #naturalhair ladies on Twitter, my name is CurlyHeadedPJ.

Oyin Handmade burnt sugar review (comical)I dont really care too much about the review itself... she just remind me off someone i know.... ME! lol

When I am washing my hair it’s all about the cold water (yup that’s right cold) beating through my hair.

Why cold???

This is because cold water reduces frizziness and helps to seal the moisture within your hair follicles that may be drained from the warm water.

But everyone’s hair is different!

This is true but when using cold water the cuticle closes up. It’s just like washing your face with warm water to open your pores and cold to close them! When using the cold water it will leave your hair shinier than rinsing with warm water.

Okay soo…. After I finish washing my hair I am always left with a few choices… Do I either

A) Blow Dry my Hair

B) Air Dry

C) Towel Dry

D) Tshirt dry

My answer would be D!

Now you are probably thinking this girl is nuts… but in actuality I’m a far stretch from nuts.

The reason why I don’t blow dry my hair is because I try my best to refrain from any type of heat possible. Heat tends to cause major breakage to the follicle and leaves my hair high and dry.

Air drying is always cool for me… but most times when I wash my hair it's in the morning and my hair is drenched in water. This just means that I’ll leave little trails of water behind me and I am not trying to get a phone call down the line about someone breaking a leg due to my water drippage…This is America.. They love to sue!

Because of my puddle issue, my best bet would be to just dry it, right? Most people tend to dry hair with towels…Yes this seems rational but I always seem to end up fighting with towels. Whenever I dry my hair with one, my curl pattern messes up and it ends up looking like a billow pad, or cotton patch… NO BUENO! I am also the type of really force the towel through my head and this in turn does rub against the hair follicle which can result in extra unnecessary breakage.

When all else fails…turn to a t-shirt

Why use a t-shirt to dry your hair?

When I use a shirt to dry my hair I make sure that the shirt is mostly composed of cotton. Cotton is a soft material that doesn’t iritate your skin as much and is used to help the skin breath. I believe hair is a part of skin therefore I believe this method for drying should work for Toni (my hair). Now I don’t really use the rub rub rub method in my hair with a shirt but the plopping method. I may not do it as they say I should but everyone makes techniques their own so ‘what the hay.’ I simply twist the shirt around my head and let it stay there for a few minutes to soak up the water without disturbing my curl pattern. The best thing about this… My curl pattern stays in tact. (this works for any hair type)

My advice! Take that shirt off!! (no pun intended)

"Not one but two

Both your hands entice

As one follows the other

Light but now dark

sometimes it can vary

I can see you moving in that direction that I like

Perhaps its not what I want

Sometimes you do it just right

There are times your fast motions blow my mind

other times you take it so slow

Tell me what my body is saying to you

is it telling you i want you to stop?

Sometimes the sublimity is so unreal

This postion i watch you in sometimes is not the most comfortable

I want to take it to the bed

My eyes grow weary and we aren't in sync

Don't be offended by all means don't be offended

Just as what i am saying is in no rythmic motion

You counteract that and your patterns throw me off track

But I am welcoming you into the space and creases of me

Because you hold me in your hands

You won't wait for me to make my decisions

you just keep on going and going

and going

ahhhhh! relief!

Because your done and I'm exhausted

and finally ive reached my climax

and you have exceeded yours

and in this hour you have to start all over again

because another hour has to be completed

this is why i hate watching you

I would say there is no need for a formal introduction but I must put my two sense in! This week's artisan is Rachael Stewart. You may have heard of her,and if you haven't you will! I absolutely love this lady's jewelry and her artistic talent. She is part of the reason why I may be brok this season. Listen to her story:

Introduce/Background info on yourself

I started making jewelry a little over a year ago, I started with making peacock feather earrings and selling them on my blog..they got a lot of attention so I figured I would try to make more things and since then I've evolved and the business has really taken off.

When did you decide to throw the relaxer out (if you did)?

I never transitioned, I've been natural for over 20 years (im 37) I wanted to shave my head because I loved that style so I just did it, It wasnt some great spiritual, natural journey..I just liked the style

What was your support system like once you went natural?

I didnt need one, my decision was mine and I didnt need support, I really didnt care what other people thought about it, I liked it and that was all that mattered and it still is.

How would you describe your hair journey so far?

its not a journey for me, there hasnt been an awakening or great revalation, this is the hair I was born with and im rocking it..thats all there is to it.

You seem to be such a success business wise, what advice would you give someone trying to travel in your footsteps?

dont second guess yourself, and dont make things harder than they have to be, the resources are endless and most of them are free, get a blog, a paypal account, and upload your product..JUST DO IT.

What has been one of your biggest obstacles so far in your career and how did you face it?

I havent had any obstacles, anything that I needed to do I just did it, Im not afraid to fail im afraid to not try, ive tried so many things in my life..some worked and some didnt but I went for it and I learned from it.

What keeps you motivated(pertaining to life/work/or hair)?

My son keeps me motivated, I want to provide the BEST I can for him and be an example of what kind of woman I'd like him to choose one day, also show him that you dont have to punch the clock for anyone else..make you own way...dont compromise yourself.

Your hair is so beautiful, but what is the most craziest remark you have has received about your hair?

Sometimes I get asked what I use on my hair and when i tell them I have one product and I dont shampoo it they dont beleive me, they assume ive had it texturized or "DONE: at a salon...ive had women get MAD at me because they thought I was lying..needless to say they had permed hair, had never seen their natural hair and had no idea what thier hair could do...I rarely engage in conversations about hair because its like talking speaking German...they just dont understand.

Any advice to the aspiring successful women out there/closing remarks?

Yeah, stop asking for permission to be great.

I don't care what season it is, but you can always see me in a hat! Whether it is a snap back or a beret, a hat is vital in my accessories!!!

Today I wasn't having really having a bad hair day, its just that I got lazy with the back of my hair so I put on a hat over my half fro hawk. The front of my hawk is comprised of double strand twist. Now this was my first attempt at the double strand twist and I am not pleased. Maybe it is because I twisted on dry hair. Other than that the vision of the style is good and I will be attempting this again.

If I were you, I would strongly advise purchasing these hats. You can find them at hair stores (which is where I purchase most of mine), or other retail stores(Forever 21, wet seal, Bebe)!!!

I made a poster simply to uplift my spirits. It is true sometimes i get discouraged with my hair and feel as if it is never going to get to the place where i want it to be, but having a vision as to where you would like your hair to be or even seeing others in your same position (doesn't have to be hair related) can really show you that their is hope.

So in your free time try collecting objects or pics that will show you that there are many who have been in your shoes and have fufiled what they were striving for.

                                  P.S- Naturals rock! =P lol

Surprise!! Over the weekend I visited my Bff in NY and we made the best of the tough situations we went through to get the weekend rolling....Anyway the weekend wasn't a waste! Why because i saw a few famous people including Janelle Monae!!! Check her hair her moves and just her awesomeness in my video! It also wasn't a waste because I tried something a little new with my hair. I did my first ever full head twist out. The picture on the left is day two of the twist out and its not so bad...I Guess i love twist outs and will be trying it some time soon, to get a more define look and pattern.

I gotta find peace of mind
See, this what that voice in your head says
When you try to get peace of mind...
I gotta find peace of mind, I gotta find peace of mind
He says it's impossible, but I know it's possible
He says it's impossible, but I know it's possible
He says there's no me without him, please help me forget about him
He takes all my energy, trapped in my memory
Constantly holding me, constantly holding me
I need to tell you all, all the pain he's caused, mmmm
I need to tell I'm, I'm undone because, mmmm
He says it's impossible, but I know it's possible
He says it's impossible without him, but I know it's possible
To finally be in love, and know the real meaning of
A lasting relationship, not based on ownership
I trust every part of you, cuz all that I... All that you say you do
You love me despite myself, sometimes I fight myself
I just can't believe that you, would have anything to do
With someone so insecure, someone so immature
Oh you inspire me, to be the higher me
You made my desire pure, you made my desire pure
Just tell me what to say, I can't find the words to say
Please don't be mad with me, I have no identity
All that I've known is gone, all I was building on
I don't wanna walk with you, how do I talk to you
Touch my mouth with your hands, touch my mouth with your hands
Oh I wanna understand, the meaning of your embrace
I know now I have to face, the temptations of my past
Please don't let me disgrace, where my devotion lays
Now that I know the truth, now that it's no excuse
Keeping me from your love, what was I thinking of?
Holding me from your love, what was I thinking of?
You are my peace of mind, that old me is left behind
You are my peace of mind, that old me is left behind

"I Gotta Find Peace Of Mind"

I gotta find peace of mind
                                  I know another cord...

So I am going to admit it; I suck when it comes to commitment. To reminisce on my failed attempts, let’s take a brief stroll down memory lane shall we?...

About ten years ago, I did ballet, then 2 yrs after I stopped

I became the FASTEST WOMAN in America of course!!!....

Not! I stopped the following year.

A few months ago, I started a skin challenge then ultimately, I gave up after a couple weeks. (you can check my earlier blog post for that)

This time, I am going to change this inconsistent life style!

                                   ..

I have recently discovered a new technique that may help my ‘greasy T-Zone always shinning face’ It is called the oil cleansing method. This may seem a bit bizarre at first but bare with me.

The OCM is simply this: Plaster your face with grease and make it sit!

Okay okay, so it may seem grotesque but let me explain…Most times when your face is producing oil, it is due to the lack of natural oils in our skin and out skin is trying to make up for it. With this method, oil isn’t being stripped from your face as regular products would.

My oil mix consists of 20% Castor Oil 10%Tea tree oil 20%EVOO 20%Jojoba oil 30%Grapesedoil

I let this mix sit on my face for a few minutes while I massage my face and relax. The goal is to let these naturals oils sink into your pores. I then get a warm wash cloth and place it over my face until it is cool. I repeat wetting the washcloth with warm water 3 times.

Lastly I wash my face with cool water and massage a dime size amount of grape seed oil as a moisturizer.

I do this every other night. I can honestly say I see the difference. I will probably switch my formula fairly soon as time progresses.

Note: Everyone’s mixture may not be the same. For more oily skin you may want to have more castor oil in you mix. Castor oil has properties of cleaning and healing which is why it is found in oil mixtures for the OCM.

Most Natural oils are good for this method but be sure to the research on the oils you ass to your mix before you start conjuring of your mix.

For more information, check out “The Oil Cleansing Method” site or http://www.acne.org/messageboard/OIL-CLEANSING-METHOD-Hi-t141871.html

I love playing in my hair so much. That may be a bad thing, but I mean I will never learn to do styles if I don't try. I especially love trying two strand twist in my hair. I never tried to do these twist until i became natural. I would always do the simply braids but I am growing to love the twist.

I can't wait until i become a pro, because then I will finally be able to use this technique for a protective style.

Any who I am so totally horrible at making videos so I was doing some research and i found a great post form College Curlies blog!

Perhaps one day I will learn how to perfect the technique so I can make my own tutorial.

                                  Dear Friend,

Take time out to take a deep breath and relax today. The weekend may have been a little exhausting, bills had to be paid, books had to be read or maybe you lost a friend in quarrel. In the midst of all of this, you must Breathe. Yes, it may feel like pieces are missing from your life, but look at the bigger picture.

In the end, life may not always seem complete, smiles may not always come your way, but you still know what the bigger picture is. All that matters is that you've tried.

"Don't stress Progress..." and love a labor/ worry FREE day!

                                  Sincerely,

                                  Me (Cia.E)

Although my puff isn't exactly where it should be, I still treat it like I got a  'lil sumtin sumtin' going on up there.

To emphasize my puff I have fell in love with my head bands. One in particulr...

Okay don't shoot me I forgot the brand name of these clips/ headbands but i did purchase these at my local BS. I went to Hair City--Golly I love that store!

These Headbands clip at the back and are super easy for holding hair in place! The triangular pin-like holders help to share the hair in a funky (not to noticeable fashion)

I would suggest purchasing these bad boys!
