Weekend Encouragement: Endless Possiblities

Listen to Will as he explains the endless possibilities we hold!

After the removal of Eve(my yarn braids), I saw it fit to treat my hair. Why? It has been approx 4 weeks since a DC. Big no no when it comes to natural hair. I decided to take two different routes in my hair treatment. I first did a Benonite treatment and then a Deep conditioning treatment. Being the great friend I am I gave my regular DC conditioner away, and had to make use of the resources i had to makeup for the lost Deep conditioner. You can follow my journey with this treatment below.

___________________________________________________________

Bentonite Clay Treatnent:

  • 2 tbsp of Bentonite clay
  • 2 tbs of water

Mix the two substances together well, and apply all over head with your hands or maybe a utensil. You must be fast when using the clay because it tends to dry fast.

I left the clay on my head for 15 mins and rinsed immediately with warm water. I followed with my Giovnni Shampoo and cowashed with suave naturals.

I could not stop the process there. If a DC was not to follow the Bentonite clay treatment, they may have caused me some serious long term issues. The Clay did leave my hair shiny and less frizzy, not to mention soft, but the purpose of the clay is to purify and it is not to be used to compensate for regaining moisture.

_____________________________________________________________

Deep Conditioner Treatment:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbs honey
  • 2tbs on cheap conditioner

Mix these ingredients well in a bowl

Apply over your hair and cover. You can choose to leave it in over night or however many hours you feel your hair will need.

Be sure to cover with a cap, or a plastic bag as i have. An Voila! Your done =)

Tip: Always be sure to Deep condition after long periods of protective styles. Hair tends to lose moisture after a long period of time and needs treatment to give it that full, bouncy healthy look.

Get the album or miss out!!

3 More days @ChrisetteM

Get the album or miss out!!

I finally let go of Eve last week. It was a bitter sweet moment but I did miss Toni. Surprisingly releasing the Yarn braids were fairly easy. All i had to do is cut the ends of probably inches away from my hair and start to pull it out. Unlike regular pull outs of braids, I pulled the ends of the yarn and it unraveled. It was like magic. In total it took me about 3 and a half hours to pull out. That was awesome for me compared to the 18 hours it took me to do....

I have just a few farewell pics of my yarn braids(Eve) and then my Toni braided after I took them out. You can also check out the video I found on youtube on how to take out yarn braids.

There will be a full review coming soon on Yarn Braids and the pros and cons.

Tip: Before unraveling spray a misture of conditioner and water onto the braid for an easier slip

Actors in a play
Acting on a scene
Reading off scripts
Living lives in magazine
And I wonder if they realize
The camera's no longer on
Living a life of lies
And acting like nothings wrong
I wonder if they realize
The camera's no longer on,
"Director I forgot my lines"
Looking for that director to give them peace of mind
"I forgot my lines"
Feed me the lies
So I can disguise
and have the world not realize
I am an actor on stage
And I stage these sets
Where I act in scenes
Because I don't want them to realize,
That this is me...
Become such a good actor
You can hardly even tell
"Feed me my script plz"
Scene one has ended
On to scene two
But I wonder if they realize,
the cameras no longer on
And as a matter of fact the camera man is gone
"I've become such a good actor"
Yea you live on the set
Actors in a movie
Living life in a scene!
But I wonder if they realize
The cameras no longer on
and the camera man is Gone
And the director has yelled cut
From so long
But your trapped on set
In a scene that you've created
Living a life of lies
And have not realized
That it all has ended

Introduce/Background info on yourself (preferably background on your
Business as well)

I'm a science major who loves art.  I draw, write, crochet,
cross-stitch, and dabble with the piano/violin. With jobs in science,
natural hair, and busy fingers making something and doing hair came ~
naturally. I'm a curious person and had to know how to do Sisterlocks.
I took the class and brought the first Twists to the class.  That
day changed my life.

When did you decide to throw the relaxer out (if you did)?

I finally kicked the relaxer after a few attempts to go natural.  It
just didn't feel right anymore.  The time spent in the salon was too
much.  I would get gelled and freezed styles that were going out of
fashion at the time.  Relaxers were a waste of my time and my hair
really didn't take to them in the first place.

What was your support system like once you went natural?

I'm grown, paying my own bills, living on my own.  I am my support.

How would you describe your hair journey so far?

I have arrived!  The travel has been as beautiful as my hair.  I've
met a lot of people because of it.  My journey has launched two
businesses for me.  How cool is that?!?!

What has been one of your biggest obstacles so far in your career and how
did you face it?

I cannot think of anything that has been an obstacle. I've been
blessed that I've had smooth sailing.

When it comes to your hair, what do you find most challenging?

The hardest part for me and maybe it's just me being lazy, but roller
setting my hair.  I always say that I'll do tomorrow or next weekend.

What keeps you motivated(pertaining to life/work/or hair)?

I think we're all here to make life for the next person better.  I
would like to think that I'm doing that with Tomoka's Twists &
Sisterlocks.  It makes me happy.

Your hair is so beautiful, but what is the most craziest remark you have has
received about your hair?

"What do you have in your hair?"  Most people guess something like two
strands, braids, kinky twists and many get it right with dreadlocks.
When people ask that I say magic and then tell them locs.

Any advice to the aspiring successful women out there/closing remarks?

Be honest, humble, unique determined and fearless.

Where can we find you on the net??

I'm all over the place. If you start with the site you'll be able to
find me on twitter, facebook, youtube, and blogspot.

You wash your hair, start to style it and notice your hair is dull... what do you do?

You go to sleep and wake up with unappealing dry hair...what's the problem?

Often times when people wash their hair, they forget that their hair utensils need to be cleansed as well. Over the course of time, your hair brushes, combs and even hair scarves, become contaminated with oils and dirt that must not be overlooked.

After washing your hair you may think that the residue from all the oils have vanished but this may not always hold to be true. If you are using the same comb and brush used prior to your hair washing, that same oil buildup will be replaced back into your hair. This is one of the many causes to dull hair. The same goes for the towel or shirt you use to dry your hair after the wash.

When washing your hair utensils be sure to use warm water. I usually get a bucket and pour steamed boiled water into it with a tsp of shampoo. I then let it sit for a minute this way the soap is distributed. I than take out the excess hair from the combs and brushes, and put them in the water. I let the utensils sit for 10 mins and wash it off with cold water. Its that simple!

For your pillow cases, towels, satin caps and scarfs a simple hand or machine wash will due.

Never be too lazy with this process because it ultimately defines the difference between healthy hair and dull hair!

Why does my #Naturalhair look dull?

Yes it’s the beautiful Free! The lady from the Hip-Hop hit television show 106&Park, which by the way I hate now; no offense to Tiger and the other girl. Back then when I used to watch the show habitually I never noticed the lovely Free’s tresses, and must I say they are ultra beautiful. It turns out that Free has been Natural for quite some time and is in love with her hair just as she is in love with her self, in a non-cocky way.

Source

As I was browsing through her blog, she explains her hair story and experiences. She is also “pro-choice” when it comes to hair just as I am. She says, “Don’t just perm it at 2 years old because it’s thick and hard to take care of; save your baby’s hair for their choices”. I must say that this woman has become one of my hair role models after reading through her blog post.

Here is her story:

“So here’s the background on my hair: I was born with a head full of it (in more ways than one)! My hair is a mixture of my DNA, strong and stubborn in parts (especially on top of my head) and soft in curly in other spots, which makes me have what hairdressers call an “interesting head.” Here’s the real on my background: African American, Indian, and West Indian.

What does that have to do with my hair? Everything. Because I can wet it and it’ll get curly but as it dries it just rises up to that afro (even when I dont want it to). If I want a straight look for a night (and I mean one night because the humidity will curl it right back up) I use a blow dryer, flat iron and hairspray to keep it down as long as I can but I promise you in the AM my hair will be on its way back to its afro.”

Trials may come at you. As soon as you think you are flying high, there will come trials that shoot you down. Just remember that this is only because there is something greater coming your way. Endure to the end and you will surely be blessed! Here are some scriptures that I can't live without and they  truly feed my soul! =)

  1. Mark 14:38 - Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak
  2. Matthew 17:20 says, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.
  3. Psalms 30:5 For his anger [endureth but] a moment; in his favour [is] life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy [cometh] in the morning.
  4. Philippians 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus
  5. Psalms 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
  6. Corinthians 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
  7. Ephesians 6:11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.
  8. Luke 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
  9. Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me
  10. Psalms 46:10 He says, "Be still and Know that I am God"

My name is Nayomi. I’m a student and I live in London, UK. I run a blog by the name of ‘beauty is a state of mind’ (http://beautifulms.blogspot.com/) which is basically about natural hair, beauty and confidence. I started it June of this year after having an ‘epiphany’ on my way to college. It just randomly struck me in a time when had low self-esteem, that I shouldn’t need anything to make feel beautiful and I don’t have to conform to an image be beautiful. Out of that random thought I had that day I started ‘beauty is a state of mind’ a blog not just on physical beauty but also encouraging young women like me to become beautifully minded.

When did you decide to throw the relaxer out (if you did)?

I decided to stop getting relaxer the summer of last year for a number of reasons. Because I couldn’t really afford it, I was becoming more aware of black hair & beauty politics and also I was becoming bored with straight hair. So summer 2009 I had my last relaxer, but it wasn’t a proper conscious decision - I just never went back. Then after several month of transitioning very badly I ‘big chopped’ on March 26th 2010.

What was your support system like once you went natural?

Well, my mum had gone natural before me and seeing her natural hair journey was very encouraging. And my boyfriend was fully behind me, I think at time he was more enthusiastic than I was. Some of friends really wanted me to BC because they thought the short crop on me would look modelesque. I got a lot of great comments and compliments about my hair when I decided to rock it - so yes, I had a lot of support and not too much hateration, well not that I know of.

How would you describe your hair journey so far?

It’s definitely been a learning experience and I’ve made loads of mistakes so far but sometimes you have to get wrong before you get it right. Sometimes I’ve been frustrated and annoyed with my natural hair but I realise that would happen anyway relaxed or natural. It’s bumpy journey so far with loads of up and downs but it’s definitely getting better as time goes on.

What keeps you motivated?

My fellow naturals on blogs, vlogs and network communities are what really keep me motivated. The natural hair community has been really supportive - I mean I wish that there could be such interactive hubs of discussion for other topics as well. I would say that and hair porn keeps me motivated, lol.

Your hair is so beautiful, but what is the most craziest remark you have has received about your hair?

I’ve been asked if I have had Jheri Curl before on a number of occasion and I didn’t really know how to react because I was thinking does my hair really look like something out of the eighties (greasy and wet).

What are your top 3 products?

Eco Styler Gel, Castor Oil and Motion CPR Protein Reconstructor.

Any advice to the aspiring successful women out there/closing remarks?

Just do it! Be bold and confident and do what YOU want to do. Form your own opinions and don’t rely anyone else’s to make you feel good/comfortable otherwise you’ll never truly feel good about yourself.

Quick update...

I no longer have a nose ring guys... I felt the need over the weekend to change my ring...Big mistake. Who would have known that my nose had a scar because of it and I am no longer to put a ring in it.

Is this a tragic loss?

Yes and No. A part of the reason why I got my nose ring was to spruce up my TWA. With my TWA i felt like a 'plain Jane' and in a way, I guess i hid behind my nose ring with my TWA. I liked the cute edgy look it gave me. I wasn't a rebel just a Natural Chick down to business.

Now that its gone...

I am living my life with yarn braids and a face with a closing pierced hole. Such is life... Thank God for my boyfriend who uplifted my spirits when i told him how i felt.

This week has been so hectic guys, but don't lost hope on me. The more interesting blog post are sure to come. College is such a drag so I am still trying to work out my schedule. If you guys have any blog post request feel free to contact me or leave a comment.

P.S I'm glad to see that the followers are growing, this means we are close to a giveaway =)

We don't hear much from the lyrically acclaimed Lauryn Hill but back in June she explains her reason for leaving the music industry:

"There were a number of different reasons. But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it. In fact, as musicians and artists, it's important we have an environment — and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the [music] industry, that really nurtures these gifts. Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society, or at least some aspect of society. And it's important that people be given the time that they need to go through, to grow, so that the consciousness level of the general public is properly affected. Oftentimes, I think people are forced to make decisions prematurely. And then that sound radiates."
