Tales From the Kinks: Abeni Smith Edition

Thursday, December 2, 2010

My hair journey started almost two years ago, December 26 to be exact, this was my third attempt and I finally followed through and wish I would have done it 7 years ago.  I love being natural and wouldn't change it for the world.  I have lots of support especially from hubby and my mom who is natural and my sister who has locs.  I was so self concious about my hair when I first went back to work but my coworkers and friends were great, but I have to say If I had to do it again I don't think I would especially since I am finally back to the length my hair was at  BC.
My relationship with my hair: OMG, gotta say love-hate, more love than hate though, I enjoy nurturing and loving it like it was one of my children.
I transitioned for 6 months with rod styles and braids and  when I first got it cut we were not friends partly because I just didn't know what to do with it but now it is growing like a weed and I am finding myself enjoying its company more and my husband adores it.  Sometimes I do get frustrated but never to the point that I want to relax, when that happens I just put in a twisted updo for about a week until it passes.
How has if affected my social life: There has really been no affect to my social life, I am a wife and mother of two, if anything I love the twists or puff that I can do when I am on the go.  But...when I do go out with the girlfriends I love to make it big and show it off good.  I also work at an elementary school so the kids enjoy seeing me with my different styles, I am the only natural teacher there.
What I love about being natural: I love being different and natural hair is what it is.  I think natural hair is beautiful and that is how I feel when I wear my hair out, not to mention the looks and compliments. My two daughters are also natural, ages 7 and 4, I am always teaching them that beauty is not just straight long hair, they love their hair especially when I put their hair in twists my oldest thinks she is the cutest in the world.  The funny thing is that we all have different hair textures and curl patterns so I have learned what works best for each one of us.
As far as what works best for my hair I try to keep it simple... I tried keeping up with a regimen and found that too time consuming, I wash/cowash once a week with my favorite Aussie Moist conditioner or Tresemme Naturals and a deep condition to follow and then I twist it up for a twist out cause wash and goes are no-no's with my super coily hair.  One thing I know my hair likes is shea butter and coconut oil so I always keep those mixtures around and  anything milky or creamy works good in my hair too. Also I have recently discovered Amla and have fallen in love with it, the after affects are amazing and not drying like Henna.
I have a blog where I keep up with my hair journey just for fun at kinkyhairedlady.blogspot.com and another where I post some of my craft projects at iliketocraft.blogspot.com, I love crafting it takes the place of me messing in my hair.
