Tell us about yourself? Name, where you are from, your interest...

Alicia James, I was raised in Philadelphia Ms and now residing in Houston Texas where I was actually born!

I am interested in anything interesting! LOL Just kidding! Number one for me is family! I love music, singing, writing! I like to watch UFC, play basketball, even enjoy watching wrestling! I am a girlie girl that also likes to be a boy sometimes!  I also love natural hair natural hair natural hair!!! LOL!

You have Such a lovely voice, when did you start singing?

Thank you so much!! I have been singing as long as I can remember!

Would You want this to be a career for yourself? If so, how do you hope to achieve the dreams of being in the top ten billboards if you do see yourself at that level?

Wow! I would love for this to be a career for me eventually, if not singing definitely being a part of the music industry. Being in the music industry is  a lot of hard work, it’s not easy, so I definitely try to stay motivated and do whatever I can to make my dream come true!

Did any negativity get thrown at you while singing your heart out?

Oh yes! There are people who give you feedback to help you and there are people who give you feedback to hurt you, you have to learn the difference! Can’t mistake one for the other, doing so will lead you nowhere!

What does music mean to you?

I haven’t yet defined what it means to me, but I do know that it is in me, and it is a part of me. Even if I wanted to quit I couldn’t!

When I first discovered  you Your hair was one big attraction for me, when and why did you decide to get rid of the creamy crack (or have you been Natural all your life)?

The creamy crack….LOL! Well, I have been natural for two years. Big chopped September 2007. I transitioned for nearly an entire year! I decided to go natural, because I was tired of my hair breaking off. It would get to shoulder length, and never would get passed that point. My hair was looking pretty bad, and I just knew relaxing my hair was killing it! I did not know anything about being natural, going natural,  natural hair community, I just did it!

What were some things you did to motivate you to remain in the Natural Hair community? Do you reflect daily, make products to keep you on your toes, write in a journal etc....

The thing that has helped me to remain in the natural hair community is constant blogging and vlogging! You have so many people watching you and holding you accountable, how could you ever go back! LOL!

If you get bored with your hair...what do you do?

If I get bored, I just try a new hairstyle!  Updo, twist, twistout, braidout, anything! BAM! LOL!

Have you ever been tempted to revert back to relaxed hair?
Yes! Before I discovered youtube and all of the natural hair communities and blogs, I just didn’t know what to do with my hair! I was alone and lost! I actually bought the relaxer and was sitting on the floor getting ready to do it, when I updated my status telling everyone, I was cursed out by multiple people who will remain nameless! LOL!

Do you have any hair goals that you will like to obtain?

At first I didn’t, but after seeing how healthy my hair could get, I am not working on waist length!

What are your favorite products for your hair?

Shea Butter and  African Oil

What is the craziest remark someone has said to you about your hair?

“Your hair is like cotton, I wanna’ play in it” ß-REALLY???

Why did you first create your blog or Youtube channel?

I enjoyed watching everyone else’s videos, but I knew that in order for me to continue to educate myself about my hair, I would have to have a bigger roll then just being out in the audience. I had to be a part of the actual show! J

Any advice for your fellow natural sisters whether it be hair wise or career?

Being natural is not easy, especially if you have not been natural your entire life. Everyone will not like it, there will be some negativity, but if you love it LOVE it! That’s the only thing that matters, if you love it, the experience will be amazing!

As far as your career, it doesn’t matter what it is, just know whatever you want to do, you can do! PERIOD!

In the spirit of pamapering myself I have decided to duplicate the doings of Afrobella.

Self Pampering, believe it or not, can be one of the best forms of therapy and self reflection.

So every week I will try to post my new nail color or design. I have determined that I have the most time to do my nails on Monday during Pretty Little Liars, which by the way is one of my favorite shows out right now as corny as that may seem.

This week the polish I am sporting is the glitter effect. Last week I had something similar but had to create the effect with the use of silver polish and sparkle overlay. This time forever 21 polish saved me a coat.

You guys like it???

I would like to thank 80zbaby for sharing this video with me. If you guys missed the first video of her hate for natural hair you can check it out here. But guys I really do feel her pain, but seriously, I think she needs encouragement. Do you guys have any encouraging words for her? I am unclear if she has given up entirely on her natural journey or if she is just taking a break. How would you encourage someone in her situation??

She is back! #naturalhair foes

Right before my protectie style I thought it would be a perfect time to trim my hair. I knew it deserved a trim because my twist were frizzy at the ends and were very brittle. I knew that I wouldn't be able to treat my hair for a long time while my hair was protected so pre treating it would be the most healthy choice.

I made a video of my first ever trim and here it is.

I must say, I loved the feel of my hair after the trim. It felt so much more healthier and soft.

#naturalhair and the Arts

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

I am such a frequent poster of curly nikki and so while i was on there last month i was determined to understand how other women felt about the concept of natural hair and relationships.

Me: Hey ladies, so for my blog i am thinking about doing an article or short blurbs on finding a partner. I just would like some personal opinions on hair and partnership.
For me personally, I feel as if since i went natural i see men in a new light. I feel like a automatically label men as shallow and not worth my time if they think my natural hair is ugly or unkempt. Now this may not seem like a problem at first... BUT i started to generalize this to all men if i dont even get a look my way. Yes it may be my ego getting in the way, but i feel like i have been brain washed into thinking that natural hair girls wont find partners, or it is hard to find one.
I also noticed that since going natural i look more in the direction of men with Dreads... shhh(this has always been my guilty pleasure though)!! lol IDK, i mean i am not saying all guys hate naturals because granted i was in a relationship and went natural and my boyfriend didnt mind my hair, BUT at the same time i have to take into account that i was with him for some years and breaking up with me because of my hair would have been shallow on his part.

So ladies, do you think it is harder to find a man or partner while LWN (living while Natural), or do you feel like it hasn't affected you?
Has Your preference in men changed?
FOR MARRIED ladies, have your husbands commented on your natural hair and approaching you in the beginning of the relationship as a hindrerance?

Their responses:

"I am not dating right now but I havent noticed a difference I get alot of compliments from women & men it appears that the men like my hair I love the way I look & if u exude confidence to a man I dont think that he will even care if you are natural or not"

"Hmm. A little off topic, but I feel that sometimes women with natural hair judge men who don't completely LOVE natural hair aswell. I mean, why do they have to love it too? Lol. I think its beautiful when they can understand/appreciate the choice and lifestyle behind it, but it should still be okay for them to have a preference when it comes to appearance. Not that their preference/opinion is of any importance lol. But I just get sick of hearing women judge and fire up men just because they don't like how natural hair looks. So what? Lol. *jumps off soap box--

My response: Its not off topic at all... and i was guilty of this in my beginning stages Embarassed but i recently came to the conclusion that i thought this because i was insecure of my own appearance and needed some type of validation. And you are completely right men should still have a right to a preference and understand womens choices at the same time"

"I don't think it's harder to find a man. I cut my hair back in 2001 and keep a short fro for years! When I first cut it I thought it would cause men to back off. But, I did not experience that."

"My preference of men has not changed.

I've been in a relationship now for 4 years, (as of January 2011), and he really likes my hair, however like Mangos&bananas stated he does not have to. I do think it would be difficult if he did not; just as it would be difficult if I did not like his appearance..."

"That one is kinda tough...since I lived in cities where there is a significant natural hair population (Chicago and ATL) and I have been natural a little over half my life, I haven't run into problems finding a mate LWN because I've pretty much been LWN throughout my dating career, so it hasn't affected me to my knowledge.

As I've gotten older, my preference in men has changed, I know this might be an indicator of my age or something...I'm typically not drawn to men with braided hair (loced hair-sure, braided-eh...if it makes you happy, but i wouldn't tell the man to change it), the styles are beautiful if well taken care of, but its just not for me. My current beau is just happy that he gets to play in and wash my hair because his ex-wife would nearly read him the riot act about messing with her hair. I told him play all you want...but don't be upset if i'm snoring in your lap."

"My DH and I have been married for two years. We have been together four. I believe my hair was blowdried and flat ironed when we met. I did not begin to wear it in its natural state until February '09 (about six months after the wedding). In the beginning of wearing it natural, he would not comment. A few months later when I found the right products or at least learned how to use my products, he confided in me that it took some getting use to.

It was not until a few weeks ago, that he even touched my hair without prompting. He commented that he knew not to touch a black woman's hair. Recently, I discussed a hair related matter with him, and he asked me not to proceed. Please know I take his thoughts into consideration but the decision is mine."

"I don't know if it makes it harder or not, but I do think about how I'd explain the lengthy hair routine to a new person. I mean, how do you tell someone to occupy themselves for 4 hours while you wash, DC, twist and dry?! And in the early stages, the amount of subterfuge that would have to go on (twisting up after we have our fun? slipping the scarf off before he wakes up? getting up early to fluff and style?) seems exhausting! It's a bridge I'll have to cross soon (hopefully!), but I haven't figured it out yet..."

"Well, if a guy accepts "You" for "You", the hair should NOT matter (at least make sure it's descent, lol)

When I met my NOW Fiance, I had a weaved in pony-tail with twisties... I then switched to "singles", then a weave, then corn rows, then Kinky Twists (which is his personal favorite), then went back to weaves...

Whatever style I had, he enjoyed (to my knowledge, lol)....

But every since I did my research on CurlyNikki, and did the BC in November, he has fallin in love with my natural hair... I wear Lace Front's to work, but since the BC, he wants to see my natural curls 24/7...

My point is... Regardless of what hair-style he dis-liked, he never made any negative comments... He supported me with every style...

Although, now that I have sworn off of weaves, he admitted that he didn't really care for them, but didn't want to say anything, lol"

So ladies...what are your opinions on this issue? I wanna know, leave a comment =)

So ladies...what are your opinions on this issue? I wanna know, leave a comment =)

Job and his wife Lived in Uz.
Job had seven sons and 3 daughter all grown with families of their own.
Job had much land and livestock and men to help him work.
Job loved God and worshipped God everyday.

One day, the devil said to God, "You have blessed Job and given him everything is the only reason Job worships you.  If you would take away your blessings, Job would no longer praise you."
God said to the devil, " Do what you want to all that Job has but do not touch him."
The devil left God and began his evil work.

Suddenly a messenger came to Job saying, "All your oxen and donkeys are gone.  All of the men that helped you are gone."
While the messenger was still speaking, a second messenger came and said, " A huge fire has killed all the sheep."
And still a third messenger arrived saying, "Some thieves came and stole all your camels."
And still a fourth messenger arrived saying, "All of your sons and daughter were eating together when suddenly there came a huge wind and the house fell on them."
Job was so sad.
In a single day, he had lost everything.
He lost his land,
He lost his livestock.
He lost his sons and daughters.
Job fell to his knees and began worshipping God saying, "..the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away, blessed be the name of the LORD."
After all those bad things happened to Job, He still praised God.

The devil was upset because Job was still praising God.
So he went to God and said, "If Job were hurting in his body, he would not praise you.
God answered the devil saying, "Do what you want but do not kill him."
The devil delighted in giving Job very painful sores all over his body from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.
Job had nothing
He lost his land,
He lost his livestock.
He lost his Sons and daughters.
Now he was in more pain with the sores all over his body.
Job suffered greatly.
Job's wife said to him, "Let it go.  Curse God and die"
Job answered her, "You talk like a foolish woman.  Do we only take the good and not the bad?"
Still he praised God.

Jobs friends had heard about what had happened to Job.
They decided they would go and be with him.
His friends sat with Job for one week.
His friends told Job that he had sinned and that is why all these horrible things had happened.
Job insisted that he loved God and he never sinned against him.
They would not believe him.
All of them told Job he had sinned and he must confess his sin to make things right.
Job still insisted that he had not sinned against God.
Finally his friends were quiet.  They had nothing to say to him because they felt that Job was wrong.  They thought Job felt was better than everyone else.  They knew Job had sinned and wouldn't admit it.
Finally, God spoke.
God said "Who is this that gives advice without knowledge, where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Answer if you have understanding!"
God spoke to Job of all the things he created.
God created the heavens, the earth and all that is on the earth.
Job said "I know that you can do everything, and that no thought can be withheld from you.  Therefore, I have spoken things that I did not understand.  But now I have heard you and now I understand. "
God said to Job's friends, "You have not spoken the truth of me as Job has.  Take seven bulls and seven rams and go to Job and offer them up for yourselves.  Job will pray for you and I will accept his prayer for you. "
Fearing the wrath of God, the men did as God had told them.
God accepted Job's prayer and was very pleased with Job.

As Job prayed for his friends, God returned his fortune that had been taken away by the devil.
God gave Job twice as much as he had in the beginning.
God gave him twice as many sheep.
God gave him twice as many donkeys.
God gave him twice as many camels.
God gave him twice as many yoke of oxen.
God gave him 7 sons and 3 daughters.
His daughters were the most beautiful in the land.
After all of this, Job lived 140 years and he loved God and praised him every day.

Lately I have been hearing all this talk about hard water and how detrimental it is to your health and how hard it is to clean. Well of course I am on the slow side, so i decided to take it upon myself to do a little research to find out what exactly this hard water talk is.

What is hard water?

Hard water is a composition of metal buildup like calcium and magnesium in the water that makes life a little bit more tough. For example, it will be harder to clean clothes because of the additional build up left on clothing due to the water. It can also make industrial equipment like dishwashers a little less useful.

How Do I know if I have hard water?

Answers taken from ehow

  • Look for clues that your water has an overabundance of minerals: Dishes will have water spots on them, your soap won't lather well, your white clothes will look dingy. You may also notice white, crusty sediment on your fixtures, a recurring bathtub ring, or rust-colored stains on your clothes, silverware, or porcelain fixtures. The not-so-obvious results of hard water are serious wear and tear on your water-dependent appliances.
  • Contact your municipal water supply, or local department of health to direct you to a lab that will test your water hardness
  • Avoid home tests, which are expensive and have a tendency to be inaccurate.
  • Call a water conditioning company such as Culligan to come to your home and test the water. You may have to listen to the sales pitch for a water softener, but the test is free.
  • Look at your test results. If the water hardness is above 1 GPG (grains per gallon), your water is hard.
  • Consider mechanically softening your water if the test reveals a hardness of more than 3 GPG.

How does this effect my Natural Hair?

There was a time where I believed that all water was just plain water and it wouldn't effect my hair at all. Boy was I wrong. Having Hard water can actually cause breakage throughout your hair and leave an abundance of buildup onto your hair. Think about it....If your hair has buildup is your hair really being treated every time you moisturize it or use a leave in? Don't get me wrong, water is your hair's (well most of us) best friend but It may be really hard to care for your hair if the same thing you thought was helping your hair is actually in turn the cause of it's demise.

Have you ever stepped out the shower to find your hair with little white clumps or particles in your hair? Well hunny, thats the result of hard water and it will leave your hair dry and frizzy. NO GO!

What can you do?

Well for me, I live on campus and its pretty darn hard for me to just up and leave or request for the school to install a better water system, so i have decided to wash my hair less frequently and only when i absolutely need to. There are other ways to moisturize hair without direct water.

For those of you at home, you can purchase water filters that I believe can fit on shower heads if you so please. Check out stores like Home Depot or Lowes for such appliances.

The third option may be buying distilled water. I personally think this is doing too much....BUT your hair does need to be healthy so what you gotta go shortys! lol Seriously, this would be a great option though, and the water bottles do come in packs, just look out for those deals.

Here is a map of the hard water in the USA and the site to explain it is here

I hope this clarified the hard water confusion. If you have a question just leave a comment my loves!

And I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.. Woooooh!

I love her polish as well!!

Tell us about yourself? Where you from, Name, your interest...
Hello fellow curlies!! My name is Raven and i'm from good old SC..I'm a full time student at a small university majoring in nursing..hopefully I will be in the nursing program Fall 2011!!
Right now my interest is mainly school..but i am a big music fan and love spending time with my family, friends, and my dogs (I have 2 shitzu that I love to death)

When and why did you decide to get rid of the creamy crack?
I decided to get rid of the creamy crack because honestly I was just bored of my relaxed hair..I had a short relaxed hair cut for 5 years..so I was looking for something new and unique..So at first I decided to just put some braids in my hair and hopefully my boredom would roll over..but I started doing research about different hairstyles while I was in braids and soon stumbled upon a lady with a head full of curls!! It was beautiful, full, curly, and NATURAL!! So for about a month I research natural hair like crazy..and when i took out my braids I decided to BC..I only had my braids in for 1 month so that's exactly how long I transition for 1 freaking month!!..I wasn't really focused on length, I was just anxious to see my natural hair and all its glory..So on Aug 3rd 2010 I BC in my bathroom with my sister's help..and Ive been loving it ever since..

What is your support system like after you made your decision to go natural?
I've had a big support system..to tell you the truth I haven't really heard any negative comments..It took some time for my Mama to get use to it but now she loves it and now she decided to transition to natural hair as well!! But my family and friends have all given me good comments about my hair..The only negative commets come from ignorant boys and girls who don't understand there are more definition in beauty besides straight hair..

It is true that we are not our hair, or anyone else's, but do you have any Natural Hair crushes?
I definitely have some hair crushes but the main one is Africanexport on youtube..I love how big her twist out, puffs, and wash n gos are..everything about her hair is BIG and thats what I love BIG hair..

What are your inspirations in life and for your hair?

My parents are a big inspiration in my life..They have supported me all throughout my college career..They have provided me with knowledge, independence, and helped me become the women I am today..because they have instilled so much in me I have become very confidence so rockin natural hair is not a problem..
Do you have any hair goals that you will like to achieve?
I really don't have a hair goal..I just want my hair to grow and be healthy and BIG!!

When you are going through your daily regimen what products do you reach for first and why?
QHEMETS ALMA OIL HEAVY CREAM!!! omg I love that product it will definitely be a staple of miens forever!! It keeps my hair soft for days and now that its winter we've become even more closer to battle this winter weather..My hair is always soft, define, and well moisturized when using it..It soaks right in my hair and never leaves a greasy feeling..It my hair's BFF lol

Where can we find you on the net?
curlynikki forum!! i love that forum the ladies are so helpful and serve as great support systems..I have a journal on the forum as well my username is rayray19
Im also on facebook

Any advice for your fellow natural sisters?

The advice I would give other naturals is to experiment, love, and embrace your curls..Also use these blogs, forums, and you tube as information source not as a bible for your hair..so many ladies get caught up and frustrated with their hair because it didn't do what so and so did..or it didn't turn out like so and so did..you have to remember ever natural head is different..what may work for her might not work for you..learn what works for your hair and maintain it will be a lot more easier

I measured my hair guys! I should have done this about a month ago but hey whatever. As of right now after my trim, my hair is:
Front: 4in
Back: 4in
Crown: 3 1/4 inches
Sides: 3 1/4inches
So my hair doesn't grow evenly which I knew, but now i can accurately see how much the Castor oil is working.
Even if its not working, it sure is helping me keep up with greasing my dry scalp so thats a plus!

Over the weekend I tried so very hardly to visit the Carol's Daughter's store in NY. I took a bus there searched the city and still couldn't find it. We went to every address on-line. My friend and I even called the store and listened to the girl's direction. It turns out the directions she gave, lead us to a weird shop with inscents....CREEPY! So when all else fails...shop till you drop! I ended up going to a shoe store called WooHoo This awesome store had a decoration of a pole that I had to share. What do you guys think of it?

P.S I wasn't going to spend any money in CD i just wanted to see the actual store and buy a lipgloss for all those who know im in PJ Rehab lol

Growing up, I always thought it was disgusting shopping at a thrift store or vinage shops. The thought of "old clothes" repulsed me. I could never embrace the thought of wearing someone else's clothes. You could say I was very ignorant and stubborn.

Two years ago during the summer funds were low and I couldnt find a job to save my life. I was discussing the issue with a friend of mine when she suggest i sell my clothes to a thrift shop. So I took a drive to one.

When I went in, it was so different from what I expected! The clothes looked high end and I was amazed at all the cute stuff they were selling. I had about 3 big trash bags filled with clothing that I hadnt worn since Grade school that I ifigured I could make money off of.

The process was so easy I filled out a slip turned it into the cashier and she told me once all the articles of clothings were checked she would let me know what they couldn't accept. She told me the check would take about an hour or so, so in the mean time i went to the mall. When i returned she told me she couldn't accept ANYTHING because the clothes were all outdated and worn, and thats when it hit me. Thrift stores aren't filled with junk. They also have clothings that have never been worn. They wouldn't want anyone to wear something that they wouldn't wear themselves!

With that being said, I am taking a little trip to the city tomorrow to a certain store... can you guys guess what it is?

The Thrift Shop

I am super excited and I will be sure to update you guys, but take a look at these videos. They were quite entertaining and thrift store related!

From the previous list of my inventory…. I am slowly creating a list of staples.

I never really considered any of my products staples because of the excess products I hold. Now that I am in Rehab, I am slowly but surely learning discipline!

I have tract the products I used daily and this is what I have:

Koils By Nature Shealoe conditioner

Suave Naturals Conditioner

Karens Body Beautiful Sweet Ambrosia

Oyin Handmade Jucies and Berries

Castor Oil

Now One of the rules for the Rehab is that we can purchase a staple product if we are running out. My conditioner is half full and in my mind that means “running out”.

Well…. I went to Walmart yesterday and while stocking up on school supplies I happened to walk to the beauty section and spotted a 35oz bottle of Suave Natural Conditioner for 1.98! Can you say “steal!” ??? I confronted the girls at CN about the situations and I guess its okay. I feel bad but fine at the same time. I didn’t break the rule BUT I could have waited till I finished the bottle. At the same time while im in school I will not have an opportunity to purchase my conditioner if I do run out at that price. What do you guys think?

I feel the need to explain to you the reason you’re not here
Mainly because at 23, I was immature, unstable and full of fear

It’s not that I didn’t love you, I know that now, as I shed a tear

It’s just that at the time, when you were alive
I allowed that love to be conquered by fear

Fear that I couldn’t support you, and that you and I would struggle
Fear of being a statistic; another single black mother
Fear that I had made a mistake, in the father that I had chosen
He was only 19 at the time, with no direction, and no focus
Fear that I would become a failure and all my dreams would be deferred
Fear that I would be a terrible mother for you… the last thing I wanted in this world

I wasn’t ready to be a mother, I wish that wasn’t the case
And I didn’t want to resent you, or throw that up in your face

Despite it all, I know now that you deserved to live
You also deserved more, than two young adults had to give

You deserved the chance to exist, for more than 7 weeks
To be loved, to be cherished, to breathe, to cry, and speak

If I could turn back the hands of time, of course I’d change that fate
Then I would get a chance to know you, hold you, and kiss your little face

You were God’s gift to me, because He knew what I didn’t at the time
That you were the love I needed, that you would mature me, this now I realize

I miss you my child, I forfeited our chance and what we could have had
But how can you miss what you never had some say, I don’t know
but I miss you really bad

I could never forget you, I’m haunted by the memory of that day
The appointment, the doctors, the room, and the sound of the machine
that took your life away

I’m ashamed of what I did to you…I’ll never forgive myself
I wish that I would have been stronger for you
and understood the value of life itself

This is what I thought you deserved to know, about your Mom and the choice she made
Although young, your Dad did want you, and never thought of you as an accident, nor a mistake

You are my first unborn child, my regret, my tears, my biggest fault
I’ll love and nurture your spirit forever, inside the womb of my heart

So you are walking through the beauty store and you see shelves upon shleves of beautiful women with long beautiful hair. Your first instinct is to pick up the box with the best looking hair right? I mean her hair looks healthy so why not??? Wrong!

Most black hair products are not made with the user's best interest in mind. Most of the ingredients in the products with the pretty ladies have detrimental ingredients t hat lead to breakage, growth stunts, and worse, baldness!

Lets look at Motions at Home Hair Lotion. The ingredients include:

Water (Aqua), Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), Propylene Glycol, Ppg-10 Methyl Glucose Ether, Polyquaternium-37, Ppg-1 Trideceth-6, Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate, Proline, Sodium Lactate, Sodium Pca, Sorbitol, Dimethicone, Dimethicone Peg-8 Lanolate, Acetamide Mea, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Glycosaminoglycans, Sodium Cocoyl Collagen Amino Acids, Cocoyl Sarcosine, Wheat Germ Acid, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Triticum Vulgare, Simmondsia Chinensis, Tocopherol, Sulfur, Dmdm Hydantoin, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Benzyl Benzoate, Citronellol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Fragrance (Parfum), Red 33 (Cl 17200).

So water, okay thats good, then we hit Mineral Oil, the second most prominent ingredient in this lotion. Mineral Oil in hair is an ingredient that may seem as if it makes your hair glow and shine but in reality all it does is clog the pores in your scalp leaving your poor head more damage prone.

Now the Cones can be both good and bad. 'Cones basically causes your hair to buildup, and have access products that sit and weigh the hair down leaving it dull. Some cones are soluable and are harmless while others aren't Here is a list of the good and bad cones:

Bad Cones (non-Soluble)

1. Cetearyl methicone
2. Cetyl dimethicone
3. Cyclopentasiloxane
4. Dimethicone
5. Dimethiconol
6. Stearyl dimethicone
7. Trimethylsilylamodimethicone

Slightly soluble (May cause buildup in hair, but some may wash out with co-wash)

4. Stearoxy dimethicone

“Curly Girl approved” Water Soluble (Will not buildup)
1. Dimethicone copolyol
2. Hydrolyzed wheat protein hydroxypropyl polysiloxane
3. Lauryl methicone copolyol
4. Silicones with PEG listed before it

  2. Mixed Chicks Leave-In
  3. Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship
  4. TIGI Bed Head Self Absorbed Conditioner

What about the "Proud Lady"?

Although you may view the proud lady on the back of black hair care products, it doesnt mean that products is completely safe to use. This logo was implemented by the members of the AHBAI to remind their consumers that the product was produced by "Black America" because other white companies would override their products. It doesn't necessarily mean that the product will do wonders.

In all, I am not saying to renounce all of your beliefs on purchasing hair products, i am just enforcing the right for you to know what is put in your hair products and to be aware of your hair!

Peace, Joy and Blessings =)

First Day Natural

Tell us about yourself? Where you from, your interest...

I’m awesome if I do say so myself lol just kidding… I’m a mix of everything… quiet and social, exciting and boring, lol things like that… I LOVE hair especially curly hair… it’s something I stumbled upon by accident and I couldn’t be happier doing anything else [besides dancing] I just can’t wait to get out there and work!

When and why did you decide to get rid of the creamy crack?Blow Out

My aunt told me to stop relaxing my hair 1 day and I did… no long drawn out decision… nothing dramatic I just did what she said because she does hair lol… I don’t remember the transition… I’m pretty sure it all broke off but at the time my hair was dead last on my “Things to Care About” list… I decided to wear it kinky July 2009 after I began researching health hair practices and stumbled across a thread called “post your fro” I fell in love! After years of hearing how difficult my hair was I decided to learn to manage it while it’s doing what it does best… and haven’t looked back since

Who is your Natural Hair Crush?

Huummm… I don’t think I have one… =/ I’ll look into that

Why did you first create your blog or Youtube channel?

I created MiiSSkECiia.com to act as a journal for myself because I was researching healthy hair practices but I wasn’t seeing results… however I wasn’t being consistent either… so I feel like if I have an audience or someone “watching” me I’d be more motivated to do what I know is right for my hair… I also want to have a voice in the online natural hair community and in the natural hair community all together… If I help one person the purpose for my blog has been fulfilled

TwistoutWhat were some things you did to motivate you to remain in the Natural Hair community?

It’s never been a struggle for me to remain natural… sometimes it is hard with a lot of the “When are you gonna do something to your hair?” comments but I never want to go back to scalp burns and flat hair… no desire what-so-ever lol

Do you have any hair goals that you will like to obtain?

My goal is Waist Length stretched… will I die if I don’t get there? No. I really just want lush HEALTHY hair

What is your support system like?

My boyfriend has been amazing! He knows just what to say all the time… My direct family… they don’t really say much I get the occasional “oh that’s cute” from my mom but that’s it but I began to wear my hair natural [kinky] for me so if I think it looks good hen that’s what it is…

What are your favorite products for your hair?

Hawaiian Silky 14-N-1 Miracle Worker, It’s a 10 Miracle Hair Mask [it takes miracles to tame this mane lol] Castor Oil, and Bronner Brothers Growth Oil, Enjoy Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner [this stuff gives me life!] I still have many product I’ve purchased that I haven’t tried so this list may grow (;

What is the craziest remark someone has said to you about your hair?

I don’t get crazy things… lots of nicknames though Chaka Khan, Suzie, Jill Scott lol the usuals

Where can we find you on the net?

1,000 places! MiiSSkECiia.com Facebook, Twitter, Natural Sunshine, just search “MiiSS kECiia” [either with or without the space] and I’ll be there

Any advice for your fellow natural sisters?

Be patient… listen to your hair… and stick to what works!

Its Lauryn Hill, my favorite artist of all time. Yes it is official i have finally dubbed her as so. She here apologizes to her Brooklyn crowd for being two hours late to her performance. Is she bitter or keppin it real? I prefer the latter =)

So I decided to deep condition my hair, and in my hindsight I saw rollers....so what did i do?? I decided to experiment. Yes i was supposed to wear a protective style but I thought it was time to play in my hair...

I have always sucked at roller setting my hair, even back in my relaxed days, but I mean there is no harm in trying till you succeed right? Well I tried... and these were the results:

I used Koils by Nature Herbal Eucalyptus gel and my sheaabutter aloevera gel mix.

My hair was soft but my ends were disturbingly dry lol

Nonetheless I wouldn't call it a fail because I knew it wouldn't turn out great since I started rolling it.

I eventually brushed it out with a paddle and denman brush to achieve my fake blow out with absolutely no heat. For a more in depth review check out my video here.
