"Sometimes a wash n go isn't enough to give you defined, long lasting coils. TightlyCurly.com's Teri LaFlesh has inspired many people with tight curls and coils with what she calls Doodles---a term she got from her mother. "Doodling" helps separate and define natural curl and coils. I'll show you how... "

Step one:

As with any hairstyle, you must start with clean hair. I section my hair in 6 chubby twists to prepare for shampooing, conditioning, and detangling. (When I don't want a definite part in my hair, I add a chubby twist at the top.) Twisting hair before cleansing will help minimize tangles, matting, and knots. One of my favorite low sulfate shampoos is Going-Natural.com's Herbal Shampoo Almond.

Products/tools that will be used: Going-Natural's Herbal Shampoo Almond, No More Knots Detangler, Silky Shea Hair Butter and Herbal Gel, Butterfly Clips, Spray bottle filled with water, Tangle Teezer (detangling tool), and fingers!!!!

Weekend Encouragement: Common speaks on Greatness!

Saturday, February 19, 2011

Introduce/Background info on yourself (background on your Jewelry Business as well)

-My name is Gaetana Parris, a fashion designer turned small business owner. I started my business back in June of 2007 but my strive to start my own business goes years back. I attended and graduated from the Katherine Gibbs School with an Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising in New York. While in school, I became close friends with a classmate and we came up with the idea about starting our
own company, since we didn’t want to work for someone else. I soon realized that I was the only one motivated enough to actually start and own my own business. So it was best for me and my classmate to part ways. After getting back on my feet, I went back to the drawing board and came up with a company name and the products that I would like to sell. Although main focus is designing women’s apparel, I decided to initiate company business with creating handbags and accessories, which I love to do. For about a year I dabbled with making samples of handbags and eventually started to try my hand at making jewelry.

Since my father is a vendor in Brooklyn, New York I decided to see what the public thought about my products. Within weeks my jewelry was taking off with a life of its own, and some customers even began to ask for custom designed pieces. As time drew closer for my younger sister to graduate from high school, I made the decision that when her sister left New York to attend college in Florida that I would leave with her. I needed a new change of scenery and to try my hand at beginning my company. So at the beginning of 2007,I left for Florida, where her dream of owning her own company began to take form.

In June of 2007, Satin Doll & Co was born and I started work on my website and open a shop on the popular crafter’s website Etsy.com. Within no time my pieces were flying out.In the fall of 2008, I launched my very first collection for Fall/Winter ’08-’09 ”Tragic Love”. Three years later, I has just finished launching my signature and limited edition lines of jewelry which is currently available on our website. I have no intentions of slowing down. Stay tuned because for 2011 I have a lot planned for Satin Doll & Co.

What does it feel like owning your own business with many other people owning larger business companies? Is it intimidating?

-Owning my business isn't very intimidating when you think every business starts out small and over time they get bigger and hopefully better.

What was your support system like once you started your business?

-When I first started my business my support system was pretty good. You know over time people like to talk and give you unwanted advice. When people do that you just have to listen to what they have to say and use your judgment but overall my support system has been well. Especially from my sisters who help out just about anything when I need them.

Where do you get your inspiration from for you beautiful unique designs??

-My inspiration comes from everywhere. Music, fabric, fashion, different cultures, movies, nature, a single bead, and even a women walking down the street. That's why I love what I do because inspiration can hit you at any time and it can be anything.

You seem to be such a success business wise, what advice would you give someone trying to travel in your footsteps?

- Thank you for the compliment. The advice I give anyone traveling in my footsteps is to do a ton of research. Research is key. Before I even started my business in 2007, I researched for 3 years. Yes, 3 years right from college in 2004 -2007 when I started my business. I researched everything from business, pricing, suppliers, packaging ,bookkeeping and etc. The list goes on and on. I researched and absorbed all the information I found and kept detailed notes so that if I forgot anything I had something to look back too. I also listened and learned from several small business I freelance designed for. Each one was a small business just starting out and the owners always talked to me about running a small business. So I listened to their advice and always kept it in the back of my mind with everything I do. So I don't make the same mistakes they did.

What has been one of your biggest obstacles so far in your career and how did you face it?

-One of the biggest obstacles I faced so far in my career is always staying before the trends. Being in jewelry category that is saturated with thousand of other jewelry companies is a huge obstacle. But staying before the trends and staying fresh is key.

Do you ever get overwhelmed with your business?

-I try not to get overwhelmed. Whenever I do, I slow down with whatever I'm doing and take a little time out for myself.

Do you have any future aspirations or goals you would like to achieve with your business?

- I have several future goals that I would like to achieve for my business such as introduced more new lines to my company's assortment. Hopefully in the coming years I will have a space and staff to help grow my company. Along with several wholesale accounts. I would also love to open a retail store so that my online customers have a safe to visit and see our pieces in person.

What keeps you motivated(pertaining to life/work)?

- When you love what you do day in and day out it helps keep you motivated to keep moving forwarded. That's why I always tell people, "Do what you love" because every day I get up and do what I love and it doesn't feel like a job at all.

Any Closing Remarks?

-I would like to thank Cia E./ Felicia for coming to me and my company to design some amazing and original jewelry for her. I would also like to thank Cia E./Felicia for the wonderful opportunity to be interviewed on her blog. I really appreciate it.

During my 8 months of being natural I have learned to Listen to my hair. When I listen I look out for dryness, brittleness, mobility  etc. If I notice that my hair isn't agreeing with a product I will omit it from my regimen. Of course the cut off mark is after the third try.

I switched conditioners within the first 4 months of my TWA state. The new conditioner I journeyed upon is the Suave Naturals Conditioner.

Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner

Description: Bring out the natural beauty of your hair with gentle cleansers and conditioner in the fresh scent of coconut.

Hypoallergenic. New shampoo and conditioner formula has Longer-lasting Fragrance. New conditioner formula is up to 2x more Moisturizing

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Cetyl Alcohol, Cetrimonium Chloride, Potassium Chloride, Fragrance (Parfum), Distearyldimonium Chloride, Disodium EDTA, Glycerin, 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Propylene Glycol,Trocopheryl Acetate [Vitamin E Acetate], Silk Amino Acids, Honey, Urtica Dioica (Nettle) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Extract

-Cone Free Product

-Infused with coconut extract and Vitamin E

My Two Cents: When I am on the search for a conditioner, I am sure to not just buy something that was recomendded or highly acclaimed but I serach the ins and outs of the product. I have waited a long time to review this product because I wanted to get the maximum results from this product.

Through it all, I must say that this product is HEAVEN in a bottle. Why?

  • It's inexpensive
  • Has a lingering, but tolerable scrumptious smell no matter the scent
  • It makes detangling easy

Most times I detangle with this conditioner in my hair, because it has great slip. And when I say great I mean AWESOME slip. Its consistency is much like a normal conditioners but without the greasy feel that you will sometimes get.

It is always easy to restock this product because it runs almost everywhere from hair stores, to gas stations.

Its harmful-cone-free makeup leaves my hair soft and non-brittle. With the absence of cones moisture isn't stripped from your hair and helps it remain manageble.

Some people have used this product as a leavin which is fine because the consistancy is thick enough to do so.

The misleading aspect of the product is only its name, because not everything in the product is Natural, but keep in mind it is just a name and manufacturers are able to name a product almost anything they like.

So what would I rate this?

Tierra my Protective style update #naturalhair

Saturday, February 12, 2011

Hola guys, if you are wondering what Tierra is, then I'll tell ya!! Everytime I cover up Toni(my hair) in a protective style, i name the style. For instance my yarn briads were named "eve"!! SO this Crochet hair is called Tierra. Can you guess why?

And I guess this hair looks too natural if i may say so myself because everyone seems to think its my own hair!! OWWWW!!

I decided to go natural on a complete whim (which is how I make most of my important decisions lol Shocked ). I was browsing through random photos online one night and came across a photo of Corinne Bailey Rae's hair http://www.exposay.com/corinne-bailey-rae-q-awards-2009---arrivals/p/33916/12/

It was huge and curly and I thought it was just the prettiest thing! I've always had a thing for curls so that night, after having a perm since the wee age of 4, I decided to start my transition. This was in January 2009 and my last relaxer was in December 2008. I scoured websites finally finding Curlinikki.com and I was instantly addicted. I was in college though so I couldn't buy everything I wanted so I just used Cantu's shea butter and a spray bottle of water lol. I was never good at doing my own hair even when I was relaxed, so while I tried a few braid outs, I mainly stuck to a pony tail since my hair was shoulder length anyway.
Well things were going pretty good until I came home that summer. My mom instantly disapproved saying my hair was nappy and it looked awful, etc. My sisters would laugh at me when I tried to explain what I was doing. My family was stuck on the idea that only straight hair was beautiful and unless you had 3a-3b curls, you needed a relaxer Crying or Very sad
So I had to endure in this environment and I admit I'm not the strongest when it comes to sticking with my decisions so I finally got a relaxer in July 2010 right before I went back to school. Getting the relaxer was a terrible experience though. I made my appt with my normal stylist but when she tried to part my hair the comb couldn't get through! My hair was so matted up and tangled that she sent me home to work through it and I had to come back Evil or Very MadBy this time I was so discouraged I just had to sit in my car and cry. But I went home and gingerly got through the knots and tangles and went back to the salon a few days later. The stylist had to use 3 tubs of relaxer! lol I had about 4 inches of new growth, and it cost a pretty penny but I admit when it was all over my hair was stunningly pretty. It was BSL (longest its ever been) and blowing in the wind. I really liked it and went to school and got another perm 6 weeks later. But after that, the curly bug got to me again and I decided "what the heck might as well try again", so I did! lol Very Happy
It's been about 3 months now and things are going pretty well. I know a lot more from my past experience and am prepared to combat the struggles. I came home for winter break and my mom was on the same tune but this time I don't care. It's my hair, I love what's growing out of it, nappy or not.

OK so I really understand where this guy is coming from and I totally dont disagree (double negative I know lol) But he is right... I feel like this society lets peoples' status influence their reaction to certain statements... Watch the videos and judge for yourself. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, everyone has their preferences. You can't possibly expect everyone to love the same thing....if that were the case everyone would be liberals and we would be running around with draws on our head -_- Everyone can't have their way! lol

February is here meaning Valentine's day is around the corner. I am not necessarily a Valentine's day hater or anything, but I do feel that it can be bit overated.

And for those of you who think I hate Valentine's day because I don't have one...well ACTUALLY I do have one every Valentine's Day... Lovely Mommy always gets me something lol

Anyway enough of the foolishness. I found this cute site where you can design a candy heart... But the designing isn't anything special. You just add words lol

This is where my lovely readers' creativity comes in. I will be giving away a 10 dollar gift certificate to Curl Mart for the person who creates the most  creative saying on their candy heart.
