Her name is Lyric… The Redeemed

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

My name is Lyric Shanez Marshall and I was born October 1st in the year 1996. I’m a 9th grade high school student at Early College Academy and I’m very active in my Church and I LOVE God with my mind, body, and soul. I also am a praise dancer and have been dancing since the age of three. I love being able to praise God in my own unique way.
When did you first fall in love with God?
When I was 13 years old, which actually wasn’t too long ago. It all happened when I finally decided to tell my mom that I had been sexually molested. It was something that she wasn’t ready to hear at the time, I don’t think any mother would like to hear her daughter has been sexually molested but I always thought my mom was a strong woman, and I didn’t expect the reaction that I got. It was then when I decided to turn to God, get on my knees and pray.
In the beginning of your walk with Christ was it something you took seriously?
I didn’t take my walk with Christ seriously at all at first.. until one day at a church lock in a minister sensed my spirit in the room during alter prayer… she called my problem out (not being able to forgive myself after being molested) and I burst into tears and I couldn’t control it. It was then when I decided I was going to take my walk with Christ more seriously than before.
Were you always a part of the church community?
Yes, I have been a part of the church community since I was born.
Is it hard being young and living by the word of Christ?
It is because it is so many things that are available to us in this generation than in the previous generations. Boys know what they want when they want it and if they don’t get it you’re pretty much categorized as being lame or scary or whatever else just because you refuse to live against the word.
Tell us about a time you saw the Lord work a miracle in your life or someone else’s?
I have seen the Lord work miracles in my own life because at one time I couldn’t forgive myself for some of the sins I committed and it was hard for me to pray and ask the Lord to forgive me because I couldn’t forgive myself and as time went by I slowly began to forgive myself and I found it easier to ask God for forgiveness.
For you, what is the best part of being a Christian?
The best part about being a Christian is being able to encourage others while you encourage yourself, being able to know your purpose and live it out, and constantly having encounters with miracles and blessings.
Why do you feel many young people are straying or avoiding the church? What do you think we can do to help?
I think young people avoid the church because most of the time they aren’t accepted there. People mostly say you can’t learn anything from a younger person in the church which always leads us astray. I think instead of older people in the church discouraging younger people in the church the way they do then the church would have more young people than they do now. I also think that younger people wouldn’t have a problem with coming to church.

What’s your favorite scripture?
Romans 8:18 - I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.
