I was contacted through my business page about a new emerging hair care line named “Secret Styling”. Walter Smith, a representative I am assuming, reassured me that the products he was sending me could be used for natural and relaxed hair because I was a bit uneasy about the product line. After browsing through the online site, I realized that they have three different product types. One for “Straight look for Women”, “Texturized and Natural Styles” and “Braids, Twist and Creative Styles".”

Upon receiving the package, I was a bit astonished by the amount of products the company sent. The sample product sizes and names are listed below.

Because I have been protective styling my hair, I tried the first few products on my Indian Remy 14inch full lace wig. I saw this as acceptable because this was actual human hair and it definitely tangled and became “nappy” as if it were my real hair.

Secret Styling Hair Shinning Mist Spray Product 1

This was the first product that I tested and all I can say is WOOOOOOOOOWWWWW! I expected the product to be greasy and sticky but it was the exact opposite. The product sprayed on dry and still left a lustrous sheen to the hair that last throughout the day. Even after numerous applications for that week my hair did not become agitate by the sheen.

hairsheen

My apartment mate was even impressed and used it herself!

ashantisheen

The smell was not to strong. Though I can not really describe the smell, it did have a a pleasant light floral scent.

I would most definitely add this to my regimen if I ever needed a sheen to my hair.

Premium Keratin Conditioning Shampoo  Product 3

I proceeded down the line to the shampoo. It had a soft scent, almost like baby laundry detergent. While I washed the weave I made sure that I checked for stiffness and moisture depletion that would be caused by the shampoo. After I washed the hair twice I rinsed it out with water.

The shampoo was pretty good. In my eyes it got the job done nothing too amazing. After I washed out the shampoo I did notice the hair becoming lighter, meaning that the products I previously used on the hair was extracted.

Premium Moisturizing Shampoo  Product 9

This shampoo did not really have a scent to it. I decided to use this shampoo on my natural hair despite my current non sulfate regimen. The shampoo lathered really well, and a little went a long way. And I really mean long because I have a rather large head. =)

After using it, my hair felt a bit stripped of its natural oils however it did not feel excessively dry. I followed up with the conditioner.

Premium Intensive Conditioning Product 4

I loved the way the conditioner added moisture to my hair while I had it on my hair. The consistency was very thick and my hair strands need a supple amount of product to really saturate it. I left the conditioner on for approximately 3 minutes and then washed it out. At first I still felt the moisture but as minutes passed the moisture began to fade. I am not sure what to think about that, but in any case it was not supposed to be a leave in so I would not hold all day moisture standards too high.

curlywig

Premium Moisture Retaining Lotion Product 11

I tried the hair lotion on my human hair and it wasn’t to great in my opinion. It made the hair feel waxy an life less. I used it because the hair I was a bit dry and I thought that the lotion would be the perfect product to spruce up its life. Unfortunately this hair was not receiving of the product. This is not to say that another person’s tresses wouldn’t like it. Perhaps the product is for more thick hair types.

There was not a prominent smell to the lotion either. The consistency appeared to be on the jelly side, but a runny gel.

Premium Instant Hair Detangler Product 2

The detanlger did just what it said it would do. It detangled the hair in a matter of seconds after applying the product. I let the product sit on the hair for a bout 5 seconds and used a wide tooth comb to detangle. I found that this product works best on slightly damped hair already. It does however work on dry hair but you need a little more product than expected. This detangler did not leave the hair sticky but did seem as if it took a while for the product to dry on the hair.

There was not a scent left on the hair either which made it easy to apply any product over it without leaving a mixture of scents.

For the products that were not used, I will either be giving them away to my friends or holding a “Hand-Me-Down Giveaway” Please be alert and check out the site. These products are affordable and great to use if you are looking for a little more higher quality products that convenient store products.

do you really know the difference?

for a long time i did not. i automatically assumed any hair that ended up in my brush, on my shoulders or on the floor was shedding hair. most of the time, it wasn’t!

lot of people think their hair is shedding when it is actually breaking, and some people think their hair is breaking when it is actually shedding. knowing the difference between the two is vital for all hair textures.

what is shedding?

shedding is in fact just the transition of follicles from growth phase to resting phase. your hair follicles “go to sleep”, to return several months later. hair follicles work in cycles as part of their normal processes. shedding 50 to around 100 hairs a day is considered part of a normal and natural growth process. when a hair is shed, it is replaced by a new hair from the same follicle located just beneath the skin surface. scalp hairs grow about one-half inch a month. shedding sometime happen because of stress, hormonal changes pregnancy, birth control pills, medications illnesses, or just bad maintenance (shampoos, chemicals, etc) that place stress on the hair follicles. shedding is usually temporary unless it’s a result of a serious health problem such as alopecia. if there is any abnormal shedding or infected scalp conditions please consult with a medical professional.

what is breakage?

broken hairs are not hairs directly from the hair follicle and it’s not a natural process. when your hair breaks, it can break at any point along the shaft of your hair and does not have the white bulb on the end of the hair like a shed hair will. your hair breaking can be the effect of many things but usually it is the result of using bad hair products, harsh chemicals, too much heat, or being rough when styling your hair – i.e. brushing natural hair when it’s dry, combing with too small combs (not widetooth) etc. another cause of breakage is not conditioning and moisturizing your hair properly.

if your hair is breaking you will notice short pieces on your comb, floor sink. the strands will most likely have split rough jagged ends. It may be discolored, and fragile.

if your hair is shedding you will notice long strands the length of your hair. one way to tell if its a shed strand is by examining the strand. If you notice a little white bulb at the tip of the strand that means it’s safe to say, it was a naturally shed hair.

overall shedding and a little breaking is something bound to happen. we can’t prevent every single hair strand from breaking. however, naturals must work to minimize and treat the breakage as much as possible. next week, we’ll talk about how to maximize moisture and minimize breakage as a kinky natural.

My Review:

When I first read the ingredients I was a bit iffy about the trial of this product. For one, it has sulfates and cones, and for those of you who follow nearly hair, you know that  I am doing the Curly Girl Method so that is a no go. Secondly, God knows how long it has been since I have actually used shampoo.

To my surprise, the consistency of the shampoo was not to thick nor watery. It was just perfect to maneuver through my hair strands. This gave me my first love spark with it, especially because my hair was previously in an untangled afro puffy twist.

Regularly I would apply the product and then just wash it out, however I wanted to put the product’s name to the test. While my hair was heavily saturated with the water and products I used a wide tooth comb to detangle. Though the task was daunting it was doable (Go beautiful textures)! I have never had a conditioner that allowed me at least a little slip.

After washing out the product I thought my hair would be stripped, but it was still intact and soft. It even had a slight sheen to it.

Did I mention the smell!? I usually hate strong scented products but this smelt like coconuts and cream in my opinion.

WP_000933

Would I recommend it? Oh yea baby!

My Review:

I used this product directly after my shampoo experience. I used the shingling method to make sure that each strand was evenly coated with the product.

I then covered my hair for 20 minutes with a heating cap, the product advises 15 minutes, and washed it out with cold water. My expectations were probably way too boisterous for this product after my high off of the shampoo. My hair was still soft but a little brittle at the same time. And as it dried the moisture seemed to have disappear into the air.

However I loved the consistency, it was really creamy, and my hair always needs a heavy deep conditioner. I just wish that the moisture that it was supposed to provide for my hair was immense. Because the consistency was creamy it allowed for great and I mean great slips.

The smell was in comparison to the shampoo.

Would I recommend it?  I am going to say yes. If you are looking for adequate moisture and great slip

My Review:

This pudding was more jelly/watery like then pudding like. I applied this to the left side of my head in a twist out that I unraveled two days after.

I did unravel a front section that you can see below. This front section was not fully dry, but it did leave a nice hold. I loved the definition it allotted to my hair’s style. It was far from crunchy and the curls lasted several day without re-adding any product to the hair.

With this product however, I believe that the initial application requires you to use a generous amount. Perhaps the real purpose for this product is to give definitions to wash and gos.

I feel as a styler it was a little to hard to work with because of the consistency and probably works best on soaking wet hair.

My Review:

As stated above, I used this product as a twist-out, but this was applied to the right side of my head. I loved this product as a styler despite the silicones in the ingredients. It gave such great hold for my twist-out, even on the 4th day my twist were still in tact! This butter was a little more watery but a better match for my hair than the pudding.

It was easy to apply and to maneuver through my hair. Best of all, it left a great sheen without the sticky after effects!

And it still smelt like tropical yumminess after a few days.

How to co-wash natural hair via YoungBlackandHappy

It has been a while since I updated you on my eating and healthy Tuesdays...this is partly because I myself have not been a good little girl. In the past three weeks a ventured back to school and Lord knows my healthy eating habits have deterred. Now that I can see the damage I am causing to myself I am trying to get back on track.

So today I decided to make mini yogurt dots and they are yummy! I am training to refrain from reaching for quick sweets.

If you’ve ever been in search of a new favorite product, you know how horrible the process can be. Some people simply pick it by the color of the bottle while others read the label to see if it’s for coily hair. But if there’s one thing to take away from all of the frustration as a newly natural, it’s to read some of the hair product ingredients.

Importance of Ingredients

Hair product ingredients are important in three different ways. For one thing, type 4 hair is fragile and often times brittle. The wrong hair care product can make a hair “situation” worse instead of better. If you know what’s in it, you have a better chance of finding what your hair needs.

Also, you’re not just fighting the hair battle against your hair, but your scalp and body as well. Ingredients that are toxic can damage cooly hair or irritate your skin. These are important to note on any hair care label. Ingredients can also be hidden on labels, so you really have to dig to find what you know should not be put on your head.

Finally, hair care products may often boast one thing, but the ingredients in the product may scientifically lack the ability to do that thing for your hair. So if you’re weeding out shampoos, conditioners or styling products, the ingredients list is the place to look first.

The Best Ingredients for Coils

There are a variety of fantastic and well known hair product ingredients that are helpful and healthful for type 4 hair, specifically emollients and silicone.

Silicones are actually not bad for your hair and can actually help restore it. Unless you’ve recently big chopped, silicones will do more for your hair than not.

An emollient is really just a fancy term for an oil or ingredient that contains fatty acids. These fatty acids penetrate the hair cuticle, giving nutrients and moisture the opportunity to absorb into the hair. Olive oil, macadamia nut oil, sesame oil and jojoba oil are fantastic emollients that can be found in everything from shampoo to styling products. Some emollients penetrate better than others, such as sesame and olive oil (which are both anti-inflammatory, as well). For coily hair, all emollients work to help bring back that strength in shine.

That being said, an emollient works even better with silicones. Silicones, often known under the more common dimethecone, place a light film over the hair cuticle to protect it from the damaging effects of daily wear and tear. This is fantastic for an emollient in that it not only protects the hair from splitting or breaking, it also keeps nutrients and emollients inside the hair cuticle. And because it creates that protective film, silicone (and to some extent the lesser ingredient, collagen), makes combing and styling coily hair much easier.

Keep note, however, that if you do use products that contain silicone, you will need to shampoo your hair more often. Many in the textured hair community prefer to avoid silicones in order to avoid shampoo. Silicones are actually not bad for your hair, and can actually help restore it. Unless you’ve recently big chopped, silicones will do more for your hair than not. If you are concerned about silicones, check out this article about which are water-soluble and which aren’t. The best offense to a silicone defense is to be educated.

From HelloBeautiful

Last weekend I was a guest on the R&B podcast hosted by my good friend Lincoln Anthony Blades. He asked me to discuss men jumping ship during the dating process.

Before You take a listen, let me paint the picture: So guy chases down girl, guy gets girl’s number, girl is like, “ok I guess so you aite, we’ll talk”, then guy and girl go out a few times, have a few great conversations, maybe talk about future dates, then……………………………………………his calling pattern changes, contact less frequent, dates? What date? A call or text may come up a few weeks later and he sincerely replies with, “been busy”…………………………………………………………………… sir?!

How do you process a situation like this? I mean from bird’s eye view it’s simple, but when you’re actually the one who was wined, dined and denied it’s a whole other ball game.
The answer is quite simple. The lovely man you gave your number to was probably on the prowl, has an existing relationship or some messy unfinished business on the side. When we date ideally it’s more than one prospect in the running at any one time. Men tend to understand this and adopt this principle with ease sometimes slipping up with words, promising things they have no business promising.

Over the past few days we’ve witnessed regression and repression of epic portions as it relates to politics in academia. Although women in Iran have made great strides in academia in the country over the past few years, both in terms of outnumbering and achieving successful academic results over men - 36 of Iran’s universities have authorized the barring of women from enrolling in courses in designated fields. Well, if that isn’t a blow to the proverbial head, then I don’t know what is.

To add insult to injury, much closer to home – the Dean of Hampton University’s Business School Sid Credle has staid a controversial decision that has been in place at the school since 2001, one that bans men [who are enrolled in the five-year program] from wearing locks or cornrows. As reported by ABC, Credle is fixed on the idea that the requirement better assists men in obtaining jobs when they are looking to successfully climb the corporate latter, as it is important to him for students to “look the part”.

Interestingly or not so interestingly, Credle had this to say about the entire debacle:
