Nearly Hair
“Nothing, is what it appears to be, when it's only with your eyes you see.”
― N'Zuri Za Austin
I had the pleasure of discovering a young budding entrepreneur via Instagram. What caught me the most while glancing at her photos was the vivid imagery and personality she had illuminate through  her fashion and attire. It's always refreshing to see young women creating a brand for themselves on the internet and in local towns. So without further ado meet Jodi-Kay.

______________________________________________________________________________

My name is Jodi-Kay Edwards I was born in Kingston, Jamaica. My name falls under the life path number of 3. Personality traits are said to be, creative and self expressive which makes sense because my hobbies all involve some form of creativity in one way or another. I'm a fashion and fitness blogger, content creator, dancer and I like to dabble in the piano from time to time.

When and why did you decide to get rid of the creamy crack if you did?
My first decision to go natural was June 21st 2014. I was going through some trying times in my life and I took a good long look at myself in the mirror. I didn't like what I saw and wanted to change that perception of myself. I wanted to know the real me underneath it all. Going natural for me was so uplifting, I let go of so much that day and I've never been happier.

What was your support system like after you made your decision to go natural?
My mum from time to time would say things like, "I can help you relax your hair" or "Have you straightened your hair lately?' She always meant well but it did hurt me a little because I was thinking why, she knows where I stand on my decision so why is she asking me. In today's society I understand some of her concerns but I am making my own life choices. I used to be so worried about how I would be viewed in the corporate world, to my friends, family and peers. I have had a few nasty comments from strangers but I would say about 85% of the time people are kind, slightly confused but they are kind and have questions.

It is true that we are not our hair, or anyone else's, but do you have any natural hair crushes?
I believe that a queens crown is her hair so however she feels confident she should rock that! I wasn't feeling confident altering my hair to "fit in" and the fact that I even had that perspective of my hair and myself meant that I was long over due for a change. Taking care of my natural hair is a bit of work but it has become a lot easier than my previous relaxers, weave and wig lifestyle. I wish this war on hair typing would end because to me hair is hair no matter what curl pattern, no matter if it's scalp grown of store bought, long or short. Who are we to say someone should wear their hair natural or someone should relax their hair. We should come together and celebrate life and how beautiful it is and how beautiful each and everyone of us are with our unique differences. Speaking of which, I think Ella Eyre is stunning and her hair is just wow.

What are your inspirations in life and inspiration for your hair?
My inspiration for life is to be happy and healthy I wish the same for my hair. Oh yeah and we both could stay hydrated a little more. :)

When you are going through your daily regimen what products do you reach for first and why?
A good Shea butter always gives my hair life, I have my handy dandy spray bottle that I fill with water and some type of oil, it changes from time to time. Water, oil and a Shea butter are my daily go to's.

What is your go to style in the winter and the summer?
My go to style in the winter is a top knot, the weather can be so harsh on our hair and skin, so a bun keeps my hair protected from rogue zippers and tugging from scarves. During the summer time I am a big fan of the ol wash and go, I wash my hair about 1-2 times a week so there is just a lot of maintaining that needs to get done during the week.

What is the most important thing you have learned on your natural hair journey?
I have learned the importance of self appreciation and self love. Whenever I find myself comparing my journey to others I take a step back and say, wait a minute girl your hair is on fleek too. Then I do the hair flip emoji and just like that the fro and I go back to living our lives.

What does it feel like owning your own business with many other people owning larger business companies? Is it intimidating?
I have always been an entrepreneur at heart, it started with seeing a book on my mums bookshelf when I was younger, she explained the definition of entrepreneur to me and I said I want to be that. I want to be self sufficient, I want to work hard to make my own dreams come true not someone else's. There are so many other bloggers and Youtubers out there who are far more successful than I, but I look at how far I've come already and that keeps me motivated. No one really intimidates me anymore, I'm a big fan of networking and collaborating, so when someone with a great idea reaches out to me and vice versa, I see opportunity.

What has been one of your biggest obstacles so far in your career and how did you face it?
I have long legs so I jump right over that stuff. Haha, no but really I think the hardest part about going into business for yourself is getting people interested in your brand and in my case my brand is myself. I want to inspire, grow and connect with people who are just as positive and soul searching as I am, it's not just all about numbers for me, it's that genuine connection, because once that's real you've made friends for life whether those friends are instagrammers, subscribers, tweeters or snap chatters, I've found that by staying true to myself I will attract the right crowd at the right time.

What keeps you motivated (pertaining to balancing your life and your company)?
As a Libra it's really important for me to find balance and keep it otherwise my whole mood gets thrown off and I have to recalibrate before I can be productive again. What really helps me to stay balances is taking time for myself away from it all, away from people, away from social media and away from that busy on the go lifestyle. That means reading a book without tweeting, instagramming or snap chatting it!
How would you describe your signature style?
Fall Colours: Black
Winter Colours: Black
Spring Colours: Black
Summer Colours: Black
I am a style chameleon so I am a big mood dresser, but I love neutrals.

Where do you see your business in the next five years?
Spreading unicorn magic all over the internet and possibly launching a clothing line.
Any advice for your fellow natural hair folks?
It's your journey and yours alone make mistakes and find out your likes and dislikes, pay attention to what products your hair reacts well to, sit back and enjoy the ride!

Where can we find you on the net?

I am pleased to share an awesome interview that highlights my sister's book and business. This strong woman of God has let us into her space and understand who and what she does. You do not want to miss this opportunity so, relax your eyes, and lets meet Britt Dior!

How did you get into writing?
I’ve always been good at writing, I think I’ve been writing forever. About 5 years ago I discovered the world of blogging and it just took off from there.

So, what have you written?
It seems like a lot now. Lol. But I’ve had a blog for about 5 years. Then I wrote a book and more recently I’ve gotten into writing devotionals.

Really, a book? What’s it about.
Britt Dior's book
Well in short it’s a Christian love story. The main character, Victory, is trying to recover from a broken heart and fix her relationship with God. Then there is Marcus who is romantically interested in Victory but she’s not having it. It’s really just my own interpretation of focusing on God and letting everything else follow.

What was your inspiration for the book?
My own life, lol. Seriously. I went through a period of bad relationship after bad relationship and I just became frustrated. Eventually, I realized that I needed to really work on my relationship with God. I’ve heard so many times that I should let God write my love story, so I figured why not.

That sounds great, where can we buy it?
You can actually get it directly from my website www.BrittDior.com

Are you working on anything currently?
Yes, finally. I’ve been working on my 2nd book for over a year now. I’ve finally got it down and the goal is to release it January 2016.

Where do your ideas come from?
For the most part my life! However, I always run them by God and wait for his guidance before I write anything to show to other people.

What is your main purpose for writing?
It is really just to inspire and lead people to Jesus. I’ve experienced a lot to not even be 30 and if I could help someone else not experience what I have or even to make better choices then I’m satisfied.
Okay, so who are you outside of your writings?
Well, I’m pretty much the same person. My writings are a direct look into who I am as a person and the stuff I’m dealing with. Especially my 2nd book, but it’s not a biography. So I would say that in addition to the person you would read about, I am a lover of all wonderful things. Especially Jesus and food… I really love good food.
How can readers discover more about you and you work?

I am pleased to say that Our Shea-Bar may be the next revolutionary service that changes the way you shop for your beauty needs. Their service has the main intent to inform us, the mindless consumer , that not all premade shelved items are as healthy and natural as we thought they were. Personally, when I am in a rush and need a quick fix for my skin or hair I run to the nearest CVS or walmart, Our Shea-Bar and find out what you've been missing  in your regular regimen. Knowledge is power!

pick up some jergens and I;m out. BUt in the long run, am I really doing justice to my skin? When I take a look at the ingredients on the back of my lotions or hair stylers I can never pronounce every single component nor do I know what those weird words mean. What the heck is glycol doing to my skin or hair? Lord he knows. Our Shea-Bar emphasizes the natural pre-made elements needed to help educate ourselves on what exactly we need. I for one I am compelled and in love with peppermint and coconut oil. Especially because I have frequent headaches and they both are soothing. Head on over to
How could I forget to mention that its safe enough to use on babies!

The bane of every naturalista's journey at some point in life is perfecting the Wash-n-go! We see all these beautiful pictures and lust after those perfectly formed curls but somehow when it’s our turn to have our curls pop, we end up with fields of cotton balls or even sometimes dry bushy gardens on top of our heads. In my opinion sometimes wash and go's are not for everyone. For one, the name is so misleading!
I remember my first years back on the re-unification journey with my natural hair I was excited to try the most talked about wash and goes until I sat down to actually try to perform the deed.

Not to much surprise I failed completely, with gel in one hand and a frown on my face. I felt defeated because I watched tons of videos and could not understand why my hair would not coil up to stay in perfect shape. I swore never to try again because I was scarred for life. Maybe not for life, but I was disappointed and figured that my hair just didn't have the capabilities of lustrous curls as everyone else's did; However, I was so wrong.

A couple months ago I started to notice the curls my hair did possess when I would deep condition. I never noticed my curls before because washing my hair and deep conditioning was a dauntless thoughtless process where I wouldn't ever dare to stare at my hair for hours in a mirror memorized by the moisture and texture I truly possessed. I had been fed up with the lifelessness for years so I never admired my hair for long in a mirror. But when I finally took the time out to take interest in my hair that day I noticed that my curls were alive and well, and the only thing missing all these years was true moisture! This of course served as exciting news to my internal pretentious hair diva. This became the catalyst to my weekly deep conditioning regimen. I even began to research more about my hair and discovered the maximum hydration method. I urge all of you to check out the site if you haven't. It provides more information on the method as it has changed my hair's integrity so much. This process is intense which is why I have curtailed it to fit my schedule and own personal regimen because it is way too time consuming to follow to a tee.

My version:
There are various ways to conduct a wash and go but this time I have opted to go for the freshly washed hair wash and go because it features more of m curls while my dry wash and go gives me more length and less definition. It depends on the look you are going for but seeing how I just finished watching Jada with her short hair, I was inspired to embrace the shrinkage in this wash and go endeavor.

1.      The first step in my wet wash and go process is of course, washing your tresses. I choose to use Trader Joe’s tingle tea tree shampoo because my hair smells amazing afterwards and it leaves my hair tingly clean (corny I know).

2.      After I wash my hair I follow up with a simple deep condition. For this I use Trader Joe's Nourish Spa Conditioner, but I apply the conditioner as if I am shingling my hair making sure that each strand is coated with the product. In my opinion this step is crucial because you are adding the moisture back into your hair that the shampoo depleted in the cleansing process. After each stand is coated I place a shower cap on my head and sit under a dryer for 15-30minutes. I lost track of time this time, so unfortunately I am not sure how long I sat under exactly.

3.      The conditioning stage gives my hair great slip and restoration. In this third step I bust out my Bentonite Clay. I mix this clay with Jojoba oil, honey and water. I have tutorial on how I apply my clay. It’s an old video but my process is the same from then ‘til now (just different add-ons in the mix). It is the same shingling method that I used in the previous step with the conditioner. I have adopted this step from the Maximum Hydration Method as this step helps my hiding curls to be exposed and prepares it to hold a curl in one of the final stages. I leave the clay in for 30 minutes and then wash it out.

To reduce crunch on my hair strands I like to apply a light leave in conditioner that also adds additional moisture. I section my hair into four and then work with one section at a time. Each individual section I break into three or four parts.

a.       I apply the conditioner to each part and then move onto step 5
                                                              i.      You can choose to add a sealer or butter to help keep the moisture in. I usually have a shea butter mixture however I ran out and the regular shea butter was leaving a residue on my hair and I discontinued use after a few trials on sections.

5.      Apply your gel to each individual section in the praying hands motion. If you are using the motion correctly you will notice that your hair will naturally clump into its own portions.

6.      After gel application I twist my roots and pin them down to my scalp, then move on to the next section

7.      By this point your entire head should be gelled and pinned which expedites the drying process. I use a diffuser to start drying the defined ends of my hair until they are 70% dry. I start with high heat for 5 minutes and then decrease to cool air after 10 minutes. I never want to add too much unwanted heat. While I could leave my air to air dry, I don’t get as much volume as I do when I use the diffuser.
a.       After my ends are dried I take out my pins and then start to dry the four sections one at a time.
b.      You have the option of stretching your roots with using a concentrator attachment. Unfortunately I lost my attachment so I had to work with what I had which didn’t exactly yield the same results so I gave up and worked with the unstretched roots.

8.      Now that you have your lustrous kinks and curls it’s time to style. At first I was content with how my hair naturally fell but then I decided to add a braid to play up the style. This step is where you can be as creative as much as you would like. (note if you feel your hair is too crunchy try adding a light oil) And voila you’re done!

Day 3 of wash and Go:

 Wash and Go video:

Remember that everyone’s process is not always the same and there are variations to accomplish a wash an go; this is just one that I provided. I collaborated with Rauney at Happy Hair Journey to prove that there are different techniques that yield a perfect wash and go. Check out my sis’s post   "Natural Hair Wash N Go: Walk-through & Demonstration".

How many of you are sick and tired of creating a goal and never accomplishing it? 🙋  *Slowly Raises Hand*. Yes I am guilty of this crime. It's so hard to make a goal and ever really accomplish it when we intend to do so. In my advising training for the university in which I work for, we have obtained some pretty useful information that I could not wait to share with my readers.

I believe this process originated out of University of Virginia and it discusses ways in which to make our goals more attainable. The way I look at smart goals is this:
We all have goals and we know what our expected outcome should be but the route there is pretty blurry. We can dissolve that blurriness by indoctrinating SMART Goals. Just like how we use a GPS to plug in our destination to give us a route (thanks co-worker) , we can use the SMART goal device in order to help us reach our goals!

How does it work?
Of course, the work SMART is an acronym that breaks our goal down into smaller steps.

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Realistic
Time Bound

Specific:  This goal should be simple and clearly define in order to describe what you are doing.  If it is specific it should include the what, why and how. (Of course the who is you!)
EXAMPLE:  I am going to make a post on Monday's every week on Nearly Hair by drafting and submitting content by 8:00 pm so my readers stay engaged.
(vs. I am going to submit content more)

Measurable -  Your goal should have a criteria so there is tangible evidence that you have accomplished your task.  Measuring our progress helps you to stay focused and on top of your game.
To ensure your goal is measurable ask questions like: How will you know you have achieved your goal?
EXAMPLE: I will write down to do a post each Monday and cross it off in my calendar that I have completed this task once the post goes live.

Aggressive – Goals that challenge you  or make you travel outside of your comfort zone usually yields better results. You have to develop and possess the needed skills, abilities and knowledge to achieve your desired goal.  Most goals are attainable when there are thought out steps in place to execute. Sometimes as you follow through your steps you begin to realize that you are surpassing the steps you once deemed to be impossible.

EXAMPLE: My goal is challenging and aggressive because I do not like having deadlines for projects and it applies pressure.

Realistic- One of the most important factors in goal setting is making it realistic! You cannot possible have a goal that you wish to achieve you do not have the correct skill set or tools. Your goal also has to present objectivity where in you are able to operate. Your goal can be both aggressive and realistic as long as you have the right mindset to strive for progress.
EXAMPLE: My goal is realistic because I produce content for my website all the time its just aggressive because I have set a frequency point. I have the skill set and tolls I need to accomplish the task, and the aggressiveness in the realest perspective allows this to be a high motivator to stretch my capabilities.

Time Bound – All goals should have a timeframe to create a sense of urgency. Without a timeframe your goal may never be attained because your focus can be obscured. Time allows good tension to be built around our goal, instead of thoughtless procrastination. Having a start and end date allows you to take manageable steps on your journey.

EXAMPLE: By December 1st, I will have published 12 articles on my website. One accounted for each week.

For you who hate reading here’s a video I found that may help (the words may be different but same concept):
Hopefully this insight will help one of you as you try to make your goals more realistic. What goals are you going to work on using this model over the next week? Will it be weight loss? Or reading that new book that has been collecting dust?
